So I was thinking about Charles Widmore's timeline today since we've found out a little more info about him and I'll throw something out there. In this episode he said that he led the island once but was exiled by Ben after 30 years. So we know that he wasn't in charge when Locke traveled back to 1954 when he was 17, so assuming he had some kind of epiphany during that visit we'll say he took charge in the next couple of years. That would put his exile in the late-80's, right when Ben probably started planning the purge with Richard/Jacob. Ok, so all the timing adds up right. What's my point? Well...Penny.
Let's assume Penny is in her late 30's, that would put her birth right smack in the middle of Widmore's reign ON THE ISLAND. Does Penny know a bit more than we think she does? Would it be crazy to think that Penny and her dad could be working together to get back to the island that they were once kicked out of?
I'll throw another one out there...could Penny be Annie? Ben's only love Annie? That's a tad out there but their ages just about match up. How about this...
An Army brigade are getting ready to test the new invention called the Hydrogen bomb. This is obviously a huge deal to them so months of planning are involved. This team somehow, be it fluke or destiny, end up on the island. Some of them try to leave but discover that they can't seem to find any other land except for the small island next to them. They eventually meet a man that was already on the island named Richard, and he explains to them exactly what's happening. Because of their fear of the bomb and having no real leader, he quickly takes over because of his advanced knowledge of the island. Enter Locke from the future who, through his tales of time travel and subsequent disappearing act, motivates two of the soldiers, Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking, to take charge. Richard doesn't seem like the type to get confrontational and maybe he even saw something in the two of them so he just takes a more observational role.
After losing contact with their team (who also happen to have the largest weapon ever built), the Army gets very curious about where their team went. They assign a cutting edge group of scientists called the Dharma Initiative to find out where their bomb went. Dharma, with the help of someone I'm assuming had former knowledge of the island, find a way to locate it. They stay there for a while, building their various stations, while the older, more experienced, Widmore-led Others watched and waited. Dharma never told the military they found the island because they couldn't beleive the scope of their discovery. Because of the severity of the situation, the Army has no choice but to keep funding Dharma, probably smaller and smaller as the years went by, their current funding being the food drops that they still schedule for them even though they have little to no contact with the actual company.
I'm thinking that Widmore probably fell in love with a Dharma scientist, Penny's mom, and instead of listening to Richard and slowly getting rid of them, wanted to unite the two groups. This would be very bad because Widmore could tell the secrets of the island to people who could reveal it to the outside world. Richard wouldn't have this so he used a child with a very fragile mentality because of the death of his mother and abusive relationship with his dad to slowly mold him into the new leader and get rid of the Dharma Initiative when the time came. I think Richard's overarching goal is that the public never finds out about the island. Ben and Annie eventually start a relationship. I think Widmore likes Ben, but eventually finds out about the Purge. He confronts him and then Ben, with his Purge crew, exiles Widmore. Penny probably chooses to leave with her dad and hates Ben after that.
Ok, after all that, I think there is a very, very small possibility that Desmond was prophesized to be some kind of chosen one on the island. Ben thought at first that it was him, and then Locke thought it was him, but Widmore is the only one who knows for sure. Maybe Richard told him about Desmond a long time ago. He set it up with Penny to meet Desmond at the monastary that day, and everything in his relationship has been a farce, just in an attempt to have control of the wild card of the island.
I'm not quite sure what I'm trying to say Desmond's status as the chosen one means, but this show is so predicated on fate, that he may be the only one that can change things, and perhaps the island is the only place that can contain a force like that. Theory by Kevin
