After episode 7 of season 5 it has become quite obvious. Widmore and Linus are two sides of a coin.
Widmore was chosen as leader of the Others. He was selected through a long process starting almost from his birth. He came to the island through Richard's interference. But good leaders are supposed to be benevolent. Widmore was attached to the materialistic wims of our world. He never truly sacrificed this desire when he left our reality and went to the island. Widmore saw a great opportunity within the island to be exploited for his own gains. A good leader would only do things to benefit their people. He discovered or exploited some phenomena on the island and made a lot of money. He did this while he was leader of the Others or the island. The island ( a living breathing lifeform) did not approve. It set events into motion that would culminate with Widmore being exiled.
Anyway Widmore made his initial fortune off some as yet unrevealed thing from the island. This fortune was not enough for him. He knew there was much more to exploit. He decided to form a coalition with other businessmen to explore all the possibilities there was. This was called the Dharma Initiative. But as he organized this, the island as an act of irony was working on bringing over Widmore's replacement within the Initiative. Through a set of circumstances Ben Linus was brought with his father. Ben Linus was a character like Sylar from heroes where he always wanted to be above everyone else and he would do this by stopping at nothing to achieve his desires. Richard Alpert caught young Ben in the wilderness. Alpert knew that Widmore had indeed committed a crime against the island by bringing the Dharma Initiative there. Acting with the best interests of the island at stake, Richard would give Ben the impetus to finally expel the DI and Widmore. First Ben would need to cla! im Widmore's leadership post for his own.
Ben through a series of events yet undetermined does wrest control from Widmore. There is an Incident(engineered by Ben) referred to in a Dharma station. It is up to Widmore to sacrifice his place on the island by turning the FDW or Frozen Donkey Wheel. Ben still has more work to do. He expels DI with the Purge. The island is not completely happy but the job got done. But all of this was not necessary as John Locke should have gotten to the island sooner and this all could have been avoided. As we saw Locke denied his destiny and lived a lonely existence. Had he followed his destiny all the death and destruction and exploitation of the island could have been avoided. Neither were necessary in the grand scheme of things.
If you look back at when John took his leader test Alpert was mad when Locke chose the knife. Alpert realized at that moment that Widmore was the wrong choice but he had already been chosen thus setting all those events to occur on the island.
Now it will be up to Locke to win the war. This means he has to defeat Widmore and Linus and the island will be finally in balance. This will not be an easy task but I am sure Season 6 will go into great detail about it.Theory by Radzinskyite
