Throughout the show we've had what I like to call smoke screens as to who the bad guy is. We had The Others, then Ben, then Widmore, and yet none of these seem to be someone with a purely evil motive.
But in the more recent episode with the French Team we find out that encounters with the Smoke Monster caused Danielle's team to turn evil.
Perhaps, and this is conjecture based on the idea that Ellie is Eloise Hawking, Richard Ellie, and Widmore know of the Smoke Monster's true intentions. Enslavement of minds, and using them for it's own devices.
Perhaps this is an ancient war, one that goes back centuries, and has never been fully resolved with The Island and it's electromagnetic powers as the battlefield.
The "Others" versus the Smoke Monster. But because of it's powers they must pretend to be serving it. With people like Richard as plants on the inside who appease it's suspicions. Could this mean that Smokey and Jacob are one and the same? Most likely.
It's power to control minds and perception is what makes Locke fall for it, and The French team go mad, and then there's Eko, who defied it. He was killed quite ruthlessly.
Perhaps in some manner The Big Three as I call them, saw the future, who needed to be on the island, and when, and where, and how...to be the perfect equation to defeat Smokey.
While the producers are utilizing time travel this time around, I am not sure time is the main theme of the show after all.
I think the characters are, especially the special ones. And what are they special for. This war, the defeating of Smokey once and for all.
I think we will see Smokey's interference in Dharma's heyday, perhaps with Radzinsky and others.
I think we will see that Christian, and now maybe Locke, will play a big part in defeating him from beyond the grave.
I think all the Losties are key in this plan, and will play key parts. As well as Miles, and Faraday, and maybe Lapidus.
Desmond will play an important part as well.
In the end the question is, will the war be won? That is yet to be seen. But perhaps there are hints, like Adam and Eve, etc. that some kind of peace was found on the island...
