I don't know if this has been speculated before but i think that Walt is currently dead.
I think that he could be dead in the same way that Claire is thought to be.He has appeared in places that he shouldn't be like appearing to Locke in what was like an apparition.Claire appeared like this to Kate off island in the season finale last year.
I think that the way he died was being drowned in a test carried out by the others when they had him captive.Similar to Charlotte Malkin,the psychic Richard's daughter.She drowned in an accident but came back to life in a morgue but her mentality had changed.Walt appeared different when he appeared to Locke just like Charlotte appeared to Eko and acted very weird.The reason i think he was drowned was because when he appeared to Shannon,at the start of season 2,in her tent he was soaked with water.
I also think that him visiting Hurley in the mental institute was to do with Hurley's conversations with dead characters.Maybe Walt knew this and felt that he could communicate with him better.
