There are two opposing forces on the island. The island is just that an island but it may be inhabited by two very old or foreign (allowing for them to be "angels" or "aliens")entities that may have been there for some time bound to the place. They may be locked there by whatever the energy is that allows the strange relocation of the island via "the wheel" device. They could just be representations of the dualistic natures of man but I think they are more than likely more than that.
One is good and represented by John Locke's white backgammon piece, It harbors the various denizens of the island. Richard Alpert and many of the "others" are representative of this. This entity is called "Jacob". There are various individuals that he can communicate with that are "special" and can "hear" him. The island could have been undiscovered for a long time. In regards to Richard Alpert I think that he may very well be as long lived as the Black Rock Ship that crashed there. It might be a situation of himself having heard Jacob and leading the ship to the island where it crashed and he has been there ever since. The slaves on that ship may have been Egyptian and this would explain many of the constructs on the island. They may have built the temple to either contain the "Black smoke" (which I believe is represented by Locke's black backgammon piece) or to worship it. Since many of the constructs on the island have an Egyptian style (the foot, the temple, the well, th! e wheel) I think more than likely in this supposition that they were with "Jacob". They may have died out over time or not. The "others" or the "hostiles" or any of the many names which I am sure they have been called may grow old and die out to be replenished with new candidates drawn to the island to protect it from the outside world learning enlightment and wonderful things. I don't think they can have children with parent and/or child surviving on the island because of the electromagnetic properties of the island.
I think this changed with world war 2 when the allies made to bomb the island thinking it a store of weapons for the axis of powers. I think then the island directed some of its others to establish means to defend itself from the outside world. I think that makes Eloise Harking and Charles Wittmore good and also acting on the islands behalf. I think that Ben Linus was brought to the island because he could communicate with "Jacob" for this day and age. When the Dharma Initiative which found out about the island from Alvar Hanso (whose father may very have stored weapons on the island during ww2)tried to take possession of the island and to disturb the secrets of the island through scientific curiosity. They perhaps let loose the "Black Smoke" from the temple by disturbing the ground through their electromagnetic studies. There may have been an amalgamating of the Whitmore and Hanso companies to perform espionage on each other to discern the location of the island or to hold ! up each others control of the island. Benjamin Linus is special enough to hear "Jacob" and so initiated the plan to remove the Dharma Initiative from the island. I think Ben at some point duped someone into moving the island so that it was no longer visible to those sent out into the greater world by it to protect said island like Whitmore. I think though that when he made an arrangement with the "Black Smoke" to kill Whittmore's people, desperate to stop their retaking the island, the "Jacob" entity had enough. He had already established that John Locke was replace Ben as emissary to the modern world since Ben seemed to developing ideas of his own about possessing the island. The island needs the "survivors of Cceanic Flight 816" who were originally brought to the island by its energy being released by the inaction of Desmond Hume (living in the only remaining Dharma experiment which regulated the output of discharge of electromagnetic energies from the island, the leftove! r affect of their accidental blunder in the study of the islan! d). Perh aps the fact they are all "special" in individual ways made them compelled towards the island by fate. I think they are intended by the island to repair the damage to the temple or somehow defeat the "Black Smoke" entity and to continue out the protection of the island. This is why they need to return.
The discrepancies in time by individuals on island, reallocation ability of island and unknown reason Richard Alpert does not seem to age are all by products of the energies of the island.
The only other theory I have is that the island itself may be bonded with the good entity to keep the "Black Smoke" entity in check and that "Jacob" may be the way it can communicate through an intermediary or that it can make a representation of itself through the reanimated body or consciousness of a dead vessel brought to the island.
Everything else that makes this show great is the portrayal of the humanity in the characters trapped in something beyond their understanding. Theory by cruncman
