Ok I think I've got it- here's what I've been able to piece together:
Almost everybody knows by now that Cerberus refers to the Smoke Monster, confirmed by the writers themselves, and that the multiple CV writings on the blast door map refer to Cerberus Vents, or the holes in the ground where smokie comes in and out of.
From the last episode, This Place is Death, we finally see what is probably the outside border of the temple, that Cerberus is supposed to be protecting-- now, IF you look at the blast door map again you'll notice that one of the inscriptions states: "Caduceus station (The Staff medical station) believed to have been abandoned due to AH/MDG incident of 1985 or possible catastrophic malfunction of Cerberus system". I believe that the Temple is the site of the Cerberus malfunction, and we can see what may have happened in the episode if we pay close attention to the setting...
When we finally see the temple and Cerberus' lair, you can clearly see that its lair is in a corner of the wall-- this corner of the wall has been split open, and there's an opening through which Cerberus can exit. Obviously the wall wasn't built with a huge gape in the corner-- this break in the wall could likely occured in 1985- during this year, the creature Cerberus that was once entrapped within the underground confines of the "Temple" as its protector malfunctioned and broke out or was broken out, hence the huge gape in the bottom corner of the wall. Basically Cerberus was unleashed upon the island, on accident or on purpose ***see below*** and so even though it may still be based within the temple, it can now explore the island at will unless summoned. The Cerberus Vents are a series of underground tunnels that all lead back to the Temple. This might lead to the question, why would Cerberus be broken out then if it could just travel via underground tunnels in the firs! t place?
For this there could be several possible answers. First, the tunnels may have been created post-1985, how though I have no idea. Second, Cerberus was summoned by Ben in the past- the Cerberus Vents could simply be areas where it could be summoned to underground from the Temple, against its will or not (remember that while Ben summoned it, he told everywhere to make a run for it). Ben also had an ancient door in his safe room where he went to summon Cerberus. This door, which many have already stated, has symbols similar to those at the Temple. This would explain his ability to summon Cerberus even though he was outside the Temple.
Finally, it's been theorized by some that the Temple has magic-like powers-- the temple could have a barrier of ancient runes and symbols that prevented Cerberus from leaving willingly... who knows, the Temple itself could have been built where it is not only for protection because of the terrain, but also because Cerberus itself, which is as old as the island, was located there in the first place. In other words the first inhabitants could have built this temple around Cerberus' lair, and used some type of mystical knowledge to keep it there and even to summon it. It may also have been created by them... If ANY of this seems way too far-fetched, remember what tv show we're watching, and that this whole thing is about a smoke monster...
To sum up the last bit, think of Cerberus as a creature that was either harnessed or designed by the ancients on the island, and either broke loose or lost its original functionality/stability because of electromagnetic energy.
***(the malfunction may have been that it broke itself out--this leads to the question of why or how it malfunctioned, and I suggest that it malfunctioned because of an electromagnetic interaction with the island, possibly from the AH/MDG incident-perhaps something similar to the hatch incident, when all of that electromagnetic energy was released)
That took way too long to write, but let me know what you think! Theory by bossadl1
