The Well in the last 'This Place Is Death' we saw this:http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/lostpedia/images/2/2e/TheWell.jpg
And in a deleted scene from season 4's episode 'The Shape Of Things To Come' we saw a similar well but in Tunisia.

So I guess the hieroglyphs on the island seen in place like these:

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/lostpedia/images/9/94/Lost_wall_l.jpg
So my best guess is that the island's original inhabitant were eygptians or at least north african and they somehow built a well that acted as a worm-home to the island and they started populating the island building things to worship the properties of the island. And if you look on a globe the exact opposite of tunisia/sahara desert you will get a location in the south pacific.
