Watching last night's episode regarding the Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham, I felt as though we were being given some interesting clues as to how Richard works. When Locke is rescued by Charles Widmore, Widmore says to him that he is confused why Locke looks the same as he did when he saw him at 17 and Locke walked into the camp.
As viewers we certainly can see that Locke started jumping time when he reached the age he is at now and he appears that way in every jump and remains that age when the island basically spits him out in the desert. Whereas we see people like Walt and Aaron who are not time jumping simply continue to age because they are experiencing normal time pasage.
My thought is that Richard is not "ageless" but rather he began timejumping at a certain age and as we see him in different moments he is simply the age he was when he started. I believe that he was his actual age when they did the "jump" into the 50s when he was at his camp. Then Locke shows up, tells him about the time jumping basically and somewhere along the line but before he visits Locke as a young boy Richard also begins to time jump. I am inclined to think Richard can timejump without the movements of the Island, but perhaps because of the control he has over the island.
My basis for this theory is that Widmore notices that Locke doesn't age, but wouldn't he also notice the same thing about Richard if he had witnessed this while he was on the Island.
I also believe that at the time when he saw Ben in woods and convinced him as a young boy to turn against the Dharma, he was in disguise if you will (as this is his only apprecience that I can think of with different hair).
I realize this is not a perfect theory, but I think it is an interesting way that balances the interests of the show in Science and Faith to make sense of Richard.
