For Season 1, the Monster and the Others were the bad guys. Season 2, the Others become more evil, while Dharma is discovered (their intentions are unknown). Season 3, Ben is revealed, along with a slew of other Others, who began to warrant our sympathy. Season 4, the freighter-people and Widmore are the bad guys, and Others become semi-good, Ben being more of an anti-hero then anything else. Now, after the Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham, Widmore is apprently a good guy, and Ben seems to be the bad guy. Also, Caesar, who apparently is more worryed about stashing sawed-off shotguns then finding food and shelter, could also be a bad guy. WHO IS THE REAL BAD GUY???
My answer is the Island. The Island is the bad guy.
The Island has manipulated every single character in the show to do its bidding. It has driven children to murder their parents (Ben). It has orchestrated vast kidnapping operations (Tailies, pregnant women). It rips people's arms off (Montand). It drives people to suicide (Michael, Jack, Locke). It drives people to insanity (Hurley). Widmore spent his entire post-Island life obsessed with the Island, causing him to attempt mass murder. Ben and Richard Alpert CARRIED OUT MASS MURDER DURING THE PURGE!!! If the Island is any sort of Divine Being, it is surely Satan or some sort of Demon.
(Perhaps Ben has caught on, and that is why he trapped Jacob, the Island spirit, in a cabin with a ring of gray ash...just a thought)
Ben, Widmore, Eloise Hawking, Dharma, Richard Alpert, the Others, Jack, Locke, 316ers, all of these were once good people, good groups of people. The Island changed all that. Why was the FDW built? To contain the Island's influence. Why did the US army bring Jughead to the Island? To destroy it once and for all!
The Island is evil; pure evil. This will be the ultimate revelation that will drive the final episodes of the show, leading to the eventual destruction of the Island.
