Alright, I am going to jot out a history of the island and it's involvement with human beings which I have been kicking around in my head for the last couple of seasons which has so far remained quite intact as the show has progressed. This is a very brief exposition of the history and I am leaving out a number of less significant details which might be mentioned. I apologize if any of this is not new to lost theory land, but I haven't the time to look through the many theories already proposed to see if my ideas have already been mentioned. Ok here goes.
The island is a very ancient piece of technology used by certain multidimensional beings to arrive on our planet, that is, in our space time(Bare with me this is as weird as my theory gets). These beings seeded our planet with a rational creature that they called man. For a while, man lived with these beings peacefully on the island (which was later known as the Garden of Eden) until he was expelled from the island and told to people the earth with his kind. The beings were interested in perfecting man's nature which they wanted to be free from a determined end. When man sinned against their ways, he was, well him (Adam) and his wife(Eve)were banished from the Garden and had to leave by turning a certain frozen donkey wheel. [In myth and lore it is said that the God hid the Garden of Eden from man.]
This was the first time the Island moved.
Later, when the beings wanted to see if man had grown in his knowledge and love for his fellow beings they arranged for the Island to be discovered again. That was when the Atlanteans found the Island and moved there people to it recognizing its power to heal and sustain certain amazing technologies. During this part of the Islands history the Island was first peopled with groups of humans who set up Temples, and living structures, and Giant Statues etc; they called the Island Atlantis. However, as great as Atlantis was, the people were not ready to live on the Island and as Plato said, "In a single day of misfortune, Atlantis disappeared into the sea." ie. the Island was moved once again. (Yet maybe some people who were found to be worthy remained on the island. hint: the first assimilated humans who followed the islands will...some of these would later become known as Hostiles?)
This was the second time the Island was moved.
[This next part is a bit sketchy but, again, bare with me.]
Over time, as the Atlantean structures underwent natural decay, occasional discoveries of the Island occurred. For instance in the nineteenth century a ship and its crew crashed on the Island, perhaps by chance, but likely as a result of a certain group of people who were returning to the Island with the dead body of a man who formerly turned the frozen donkey wheel. This man was then reincarnated, or brought back alive and given extraordinary power and knowledge. His name was Jacob, and the captain of the Black Rock's name was Richard. (a nod to author explorer of the time Sir Richard Burton, easter egged in teenage Locke's locker). The crew would join Others on the Island with Richard as their leader. Richard followed Jacob who followed the Island (the beings that created it, who live within it, manipulate people's minds to make them dream and see visions as well as have certain memories brought to life. When they get pissed, they pull trees out of the ground, throw people! through the air, etc. They can appear in many forms, but naturally they naturally appear to human eyes,... as black smoke.)
After some time, the US Military, while looking for an island sight to test an atomic bomb. Many of these Military men were killed by the Hostiles and others but a team of scientists working on the project, or at least one of them named Alvar Hanso, managed to leave the Island. After forsaking his research into producing weapons of mass destruction he turned his mind toward scientific utopian pursuits. He remembered the Island and some of its strange properties as the perfect sight to begin a vast research project. He recruited like minded scientists (such as the deGroots, Chang, and so forth) and financial backers (Mittelos, Paik, etc) and sought out the Island, after some difficulty the Island was eventually reached through a portal built in Portland Oregon (after a while a station was constructed that had an underwater dock with a submarine in it to take you from the portal to the Island proper. This made for a clever disguise of the Islands hiddeness). Once the Dharma In! itiative arrived on the island they set up defenses against the Hostiles and built many tunnels and scientific stations for their experiments as well as living arrangements. They, misguided as they were, were trying to create a Utopia and discover new knowledge and technologies which would save the world from its eminent self destruction (this idea comes from Francis Bacon in his story of the "New Atlantis"...go learn about it on WIkipedia, it was very Dharma Initiative like. Hmmm... a New Atlantis built on the same sight as the old Atlantis. Coincidence? I think not).
Well, as the Hostiles frequently attacked the Dharma Initiative, (eventually recruiting a young boy to help them eliminate them) some scientist and hostiles together decided to flee the Island for the regular world. Most notable in this group were the Hostiles, Elly and Widmore, and from the Dharma Initiative at least two women (future flight attendant Cindy and Libby)and likely a few others (notably a number of children, the young Charlotte and her mother, Dr. Chang and his son Miles, for instance).
Well this was not supposed to happen, so those who left the Island that were not supposed to, were destined to return to the Island with the one who moved it once again in order to go and fetch them. This was a young doctor by the name of Christian Shepherd who had defected from the Dharma research team and joined Richards people). He failed to convince the defectors to return to the Island and so lived his life, had a few children (Jack with one woman and Claire with another) and become a very successful surgeon but depressed Island longing alcoholic. But little did he know, things were at work to return him and his children and other select human beings to the Island. Of Course, he had to return as a dead man in a box. Cindy, Libby, and others, with the help of powerful men and the Islands Ancient beings (sounds crazy huh) managed to assemble a very select group of people and the body of Christian, aboard Oceanic Flight 815. Once it crashed (of course by a number of design! ed "coincidences" involving a failure to push a certain button in time) Christians body was reanimated and he, like others before him, became a spokesperson for the Island.
We have watched the most recent history of the Island at its dealing with man. Of course we see a certain Cycle is underway. Now those who left the Island must return with it's future representative a certain Economist, by the name Jeremy Bentham, no wait, I mean John Locke.
I have left off a number of things concerning Widmore, Desmond, and Ben which I will perhaps post another time. Thanks for reading and let me know what you think. Theory by T. Russ
