Prior to this episode, I was undecided about Ben's motives. After hearing Christian say that Ben is untrustworthy, I am convinced that he is the bad guy in Lost, and I have a new theory explaining how and why.
Throughout the centuries, Jacob has "chosen" different people to try to help him. This continued through the 1950s, when Charles Widmore was being mentored by Richard Alpert to become the next "chosen one". Finally, Benjamin Linus becomes the "chosen one" after killing the Dharma Initiative.
For a while, everything was good. Ben had his power, Juliet had her book club...but then something happened to piss Ben off. Jacob told him that a new "chosen one" was coming to the Island; John Locke. Ben, a power hungry individual with serious mental problems, refused to accept the appointment of the Island. The Island retaliated by giving Ben a spinal tumor!
If the island gave Ben the tumor, why did it also bring Jack to the island? Simple; it didn't, Ben did! Remember, Jack Shepard wasn't even on Jacob's list!! If Jacob's list determines the people he attempted to bring to the Island, it is possible he didn't even know Jack was going to be on the plane. I think Ben could have discovered how the Island intended to bring the new "chosen one" to the island, and arranged for Jack to be on the same plane!
So Locke is now on the island, as well as Jack. Ben uses Jack to fix his tumor, then sets out on his next mission: killing John Locke. There's just one problem; the island won't let John Locke die! As long as Locke is on the island, he is protected. Do you see where this is going?
Ben lies to Locke to get him to stop pushing the button. I think this allowed the Island to begin time skipping; the energy powering the donkey wheel wasn't being dispersed every 108 minutes by the button. He then lies again so he can be the one to move the Island, knowing that by doing so he will effectively force Locke to "chase" him, moving the island and moving himself into the real world. Once Locke is in the real world, Ben hunts him down, kills him and stages a suicide, and takes Jin's ring.
Why can't the Island protect Locke if it could protect Michael in the real world? The answer for me is, I don't think the Island was protecting Michael. As mentioned in one of my previous theories, I think Michael died on the freighter while the Island was in the past, which prevented him from killing himself while off the island; he can't change the "past" and thats technically the past. So the Island didn't protect Michael, but I believe it can protect people on it.
Unfortunately for bad guy Ben, however, the Island was expecting Locke to die. Ben thinks he is going to surprise the Island by bringing back the new "chosen one" in a pine box. He thinks he will then be able to assume his previous position of power that he desires so much. The Island, however, was expecting Locke to die, and I think that when Ben does get back, he will be genuinely surprised when Locke either:
