Well heres a wacky theory me and my friend have just discussed. We KNOW there will only ever be ONE timeline on Lost, Damon and Carlton have made this clear. So my theory consists of multiple character appearances in natural time. Here me out...
We can pretty much guarantee from what Hawking said, that the timeline is unchangeable and has in a way, already been played out. It is a pre-determined plan not subject to alterations. Surely then, to halt a paradox, characters like Locke have been in the same time at the same place in more than one state of pyschallity.
Back in S1 when Locke hits the hatch door in natural time and the light comes on, ANOTHER form of Locke is actually stood a few steps away from him. When Claire gives Birth in natural time there is a Sawyer on the beach/cave (whereever) and a Sawyer watching Kate.
This would also explain the Locke/Alpert confusion. That in 1950 natural time Locke comes to Alpert and says 'im somehow from the future and am special, i'll be able to walk again and will be able to communicate with Jacob... im your leader'. Meaning Locke ACTUALLY existed before he was even born, this would be the only way to make the rule of 'not changing the past' and having 'one timeline' work correctly.
Something has made me wonder also, if Miles and Charlotte are having nosebleeds because they have been on the island for a while now, could the island itself suffer from som sort of 'bigger nosebleed' which could result in the jughead blowing up? Just a thought.
