This is my theory I dont know if its been discussed before. It is a bit long winded/complicated, but isnt everything Lost related?
I believe that everything thats happening - the whole story is based around Jacob and I think that Jacob is Aaron. In the current time he is a grown man hiding out in the shack with his mother(claire) and grandfather(Jacks dad).
I think its all connected with the time travel thats happening. Present day Jacob has to ensure that Aaron(himself) is born on the island - which is why the plane was brought there by the others and why the others were and are still so interested in Claires baby. It would also explain why Claire seems to have abandoned Aaron - because she has to for the correct future to take place and knows he is ok because he is there with her as Jacob(future Aaron).
Meanwhile the Oceanic 6 have left the island and Jacob must ensure that they return along with Aaron - to the time period when Locke left Sawyer & co (which I reckon will turn out to be around 20-30 years ago, and will lead on to us seeing Farraday mixing with the DI a couple of episodes ago) so that Aaron can grow up to become the present day Jacob and complete the cycle i.e. ouroboros.
Hope this makes some sort of sense - it will probably turn out to be completley wrong! Theory by DP1
