BASIC IDEA: Locke is being deceived by the island (Alpert/Jacob) into killing himself. Ben killing Locke is actually a 'good' act, and actually saved Locke. It was not an evil act as we are being led to believe...
(very) LONG EXPLANATION: An important scene in episode 7 shows Locke standing on a table with a cord wrapped round his neck, plaster cast on his leg, right arm extended, threatening to hang himself.
This scene is HIGHLY symbolic and may be an insight into the bigger picture.
Let's look at the symbolism i am referring to: (feel free to research this stuff further - there is plenty of info on the net)
CORD ROUND NECK: This is an ancient symbol. It refers to an initiate gladly surrendering his life to a higher cause (or to higher members of a hierarchy or "Brotherhood"). Famous in Freemasonary, but pre-dates this secret society.
PANTS LEG PULLED UP: This is used in the same rituals in which we see initiates wearing a cord or noose round their necks. It goes hand-in-hand with the above and the fact that Locke had his plaster cast on made an obvious reference to this ritual.
RIGHT HAND POINTING: In this same scene, Locke has his right hand extended and pointing with his index figure. This is another ancient symbol. The Freemasons call it The Sign of Faith but, once again, this symbol pre-dates the Masons. Locke is ALL ABOUT faith.
At this point in time one would suggest that this is all merely symbolism inserted by the writers to show Locke's willingness to sacrifice himself for the higher cause - that of course being the Island.
HOWEVER, The 'ritual' we are referring to here, the one which is being undeniably referenced by the writers, has a double-meaning of sorts.
Taken from a Freemasonic perspective, this is a ritual carried out by initiates, by those who wish to enter the brotherhood. They (symbolically) put the brotherhood ahead of their own lives by wearing the noose/cord and in return expect to learn man's greatest secrets.
They, however, are being deceived (or 'hoodwinked'). They are merely the lowest rung of a society which has many many levels and secrets. As low-level initiates, they are told lies and are kept in the dark as to almost all secrets the society holds.
Only once they have climbed the ladder and proven themselves worthy do they slowly get the truth revealed to them.
With the OBVIOUS reference to this ritual are we being told through symbolism that Locke is being deceived? That everything he has been told about the island is all a lie?
If we replace the initiate symbolically sacrificing himself for 'the brotherhood' with Locke literally sacrificing himself for the island then THE ISLAND IS DECEIVING LOCKE. (just like the 'brotherhood' deceives the initiate)
So this would mean that the island's purpose/intent could indeed be evil and it is only using John Locke, deceiving him, for its own purpose.
I think Ben killed John Locke because if Locke had killed himself then the island (Alpert/Jacob) would have got Locke out of the way. I think it is the island which is evil... Theory by Srsen
