I am a long time reader of this website, but this is my first post, hope it's a good one.
I awoke last night just before midnight after watching episode 5.04 'The Little Prince' with a thought about Daniel's description of time travel. Perhaps the island was speaking to my unconscious mind...or perhaps there are all kinds of holes in this theory...you be the judge.
If I remember correctly, Daniel explained that time travel was like being on a road where you could jump forward or backward, but you couldn't change where the road was going. Daniel didn't say if there was just one road or many roads though. I think there are many roads that run parallel with one another and the group is not only jumping forward and backward in time, but also from side to side in time (lane to lane if you will).
I think this because, while watching the episode, I thought that it was strange that Locke didn't want to find himself at the hatch (or at least see himself at the hatch)and Sawyer didn't say anything to Kate or Claire. I know these must have been surreal moments and yes you can make a case for them thinking that things had to play out a certain way, but still...
It gets more complicated.....keep reading. What's more, I think that it would be impossible for the same person to exist at the same time as their future / past selves. I don't think the universe would let that happen. This is why I think that at that moment, when they saw the hatch light and when Sawyer saw Kate and Claire, not only were they back in time, they were back in time AND on a different lane of time. The lane they were in was very similar to the lane they need to be in, but with different people playing the 'roles' of Locke, Sawyer, and anyone else that was time jumping with them.
I think that if Locke had gone to the light in the hatch he would have seen someone other than himself there (same events, but in a different lane of time). Likewise, if Sawyer had said something to Kate and Claire, they would have thought he was a stranger.
This explains why the Oceanic six have to get back to the island...to help get everyone back in the right lane of time. Perhaps there is some future event that leads to the destruction of the island on all of the other lanes except for the lane that has the Oceanic six, as played by the people we have come to know, on it.
So there's my theory, what do you think?Theory by Scott in DE
