John Locke is Jeremy Bentham, whose name is dedicated to a famous economist. John Locke is the economist who Elsa is working for in the episode "The Economist". Locke has been gathering information on the Oceanic 6 since he arrived in Tunisia after giving the donkey wheel a little push. He joined forces with Charles Widmore and they have been trying to locate and guide the Oceanic 6 back to the island. The reason Sun never met with Locke is because he promised to not go see her. Ben and Locke have been in a power struggle ever since October 24, 2005, when Ben landed in Tunisia. Ben wanted Widmore's associates and Penny dead, but then he found the added bonus of Locke working for Widmore. So Ben let Locke kill himself by hanging using reverse psychology, he took Jin's ring from Locke, he gave Locke's letter to Ms. Hawking to give to Jack, and he took up Locke's mission with his own missions to kill Penny Widmore and Return to the Island.
When Sayid found out who he was hunting John Locke, he quit working for Ben and vowed to never trust him or anyone with him, including Jack, again. Unfortunately for Locke, Charles Widmore was responsible for Nadia's assasination and Ben took advantage of his desire for revenge. Locke visited Jack, Kate, Walt, Hurley, and Sayid. Jack and Kate rejected what he had to say. Hurley thought it was just a hallucination. Sayid knew that Locke was the man he had been hunting and he decided to walk away from evereything. Ben found Locke while he was depressed about his inability to bring everyone back and he convinced Locke that he had to die to bring them back. Walt knew everyone was lying but he didn't know why or what happened to his dad.
So Widmore followed Locke as he met the Oceanic 6 and he knew that they had to go back. So Widmore contacted Ms. Hawking and she told him how to get them back. Locke killed himself out of desperation and sacrifice, Ben and Widmore took advantage so they could use the event window to bring their control back to the island.
John Locke has been used by his father, Ben Linus, Christian Sheppard and Jacob, and finally Charles Widmore. This is leading to the final chapter of Lost where John Locke is no longer used but is useful as the Co-leader of the island along with Jack Sheppard.
