First of all, I just want to say that I am NOT english, so I'm sorry if there are any mistakes in this text (I'm sure that there will be)
This theory might be a little dificult to understand, but it's what I think that might happen in LOST.
Imagine this:
At the end of season 6, Penny dies because she's Widmores daughter. Desmond is broken hearted and goes back in time (remember, he's "special"), to fix that.
So he goes back in time, and becomes Jacob, trying to interfeer in the past, so that everything goes in a way that won't kill Penny. He gives himself the name of JACOB, and tells the Others what to do with the people that survived the plain crash of Oceanic 815.
We all know that Jacob has a list of the names of the survivors, and has specific tasks for them. Well, our "brotha" could have done that, since he knows them all, and knows at they all can do.
He's trying to fix the past, because something went wrong in the final confrontation between Ben and Widmore, that ends up killing Penny.
We only got two shots of jacob. One of them is when he's sitting in a chair, and that is too dark, we can't even see anything. But then, we have his eye:

Now you analize that eye, and tell me if that is not Desmond. That's his eye, his nose.
