This theory answers the following questions:
What was the incident?
Who was pushing the Swan station button during the purge?
How was Kelvin Inman hired to DHARMA?
Why did Radzinsky kill himself?
I've got this theory in my head, and it makes perfect sense to me. It is kind of big, so I'll try to explain it as easily as possible.
The story starts when Radzinsky joined Dharma and ended up in the Swan hatch. We all know he created the blast door map, so one way or another he found out that it was safe to go outside the hatch and that there were other stations on the island.
During one of his (supposable secret) travels on the island he encounters a young Benjamin Linus. Ben convinces/blackmails Radzinsky to join his quest of whiping out Dharma. Either Ben, Radzinsky or Richard finds out what the Tempest station can do, and, seen that Radzinsky is some kind of a genius, he finds a way of operating the Tempest gas from the computer in the Swan.
* Between this and the rest of the story comes Daniel Faraday's visit to Piere Chang. Daniel warns Chang about the purge and convices him to make a video that says that they need to keep pushing the button every 108 minutes. *
On December 19, 1992, Radzinsky releases the gas and is by that way responsible for the purge. Because he is down in the Swan, he survives and is able to continue pushing the button.
After the purge, Radzinsky and Ben agree upon bringing someone to the Island who can help push the Swan button. Radzinsky edits the Swan video with the newly shot scene, and leaves some things out that leads to him using the computer to acces the Tempest station.
The man who they hire to push the button is Kelvin Inman. Just like Radzinsky and Desmond, Inman finds out that getting sick if you come out of the hatch is a lie. Radzinsky refuses to tell Inman why he lied about it and for feeling guilty about the purge Radzinsky shoots himself.
The question remains: how long was Inman in the hatch before Desmond showed up? My guess? A looong time. The Purge happened in 1992, and Desmond didn't came to the island until I think somewhat 2001. However, it could be possible that the others helped out pushing the button the first couple of years.
