To sum everything up that is to follow, The "incident" that occurred on the island in 1985 is happening at the same time as the "Event Window" that has been determined by Eloise Hawking.
In the last episode, This Place is Death, Ben, Locke's body, Desmond, Jack, and Sun gather together inside the church where Eloise Hawking was seen working on determining the Event Window that shows where and when the island can be found. This scene takes place roughly in early January 2008, a few days after Bentham's death. Based on the scientific nature of the pendulum map and the physics on the chalkboard, I would say this place has been used before to find the island. So the next logical question is, why is there an event window of only 70 hours for their return and why is it happening now?
It is happening now because the real world and the island both exist in the same time during this window. We know this because of Faraday's rocket experiment and this season's time skips on the island. The island has been moving through time erratically and it only became possible to determine the window after 3 years went by in the real world, and only 2 days went by in the perception of the Left-behinders. So let's assume Locke fixed the skipping island by correcting the Orchid wheel and the island exists firmly in one time period. So what time period would be perfect for locating the island's unique energy that might otherwise be hidden?
The perfect time for the island to be seen by the outside world in this now stable time period would be during the catastrophic "Incident" that occurred at the Swan station in 1985. During this incident, Pierre Cheng (aka Marvin Candle, etc.) had his left arm torn off and one result was the protocol of entering the numbers in the computer in order to discharge the electromagnetic energy that was damned up by the station (stated by Kelvin Inman). On the Swan Blast door Map, it states that the AH/MDG Incident in 1985 might have been to blame for the Caduceus station (the staff) being abandoned. AH/MDG, I wonder what those initials could be? Alvar Hanso and someone with initials MDG. Well Pierre Cheng has used aliases before so why not Marvin De Groot, or Mark David Gunther.
During the swan Incident, huge amounts of electromagnetic energy were probably released which allowed for the island to be seen briefly by the outside world (just like the swan implosion did). This energy which was released in 1985 island time was detected by the lampost station in LA by Ms. Eloise Hawking in 2008, outside-world time. Based on the strength and location of the energy, she determined which bearing would lead to the island and how long this (dare I say) wormhole between time periods would stay open. We know that the concept of wormholes is valid on LOST because of Pierre Cheng's video during Comic Con 2008 in which he states he is using a wormhole to transmit his video to 2008 from 30 years in the past.
So everyone who will return to the island will arrive about the time of the Swan Incident (whether their arrival is the cause or effect of the Incident is yet to be determined). The returning group will encounter the Left-behinders who probably had to join the Dharma Initiative so they wouldn't be killed by the Arrow station's militia. (This is supported by Daniel Faraday being seen in the Orchid during construction, Daniel's warning to Charlotte as a girl, and how Daniel ended up with a notebook all about the Dharma Initiative.) They will record the radio broadcast of 4,8,15,16,23,42 at the radio tower so that someone will always know the numbers to enter into the computer (Oh yeah, listen to the radio message in This Place is Death and you will hear several distinct voices including Hurley's saying the numbers!)
So Jack, Kate, Sun, Sayid, Desmond, Ben, and Locke will return to 1985 (just like Back to the Future, which is a big inspiration for this season) about the time of the "Incident" in the Swan with Alvar Hanso and Pierre Cheng, everyone has aliases while they work for the Dharma Initiative, Daniel tries to change the past, Miles' childhood on the island is revealed, Cerberus is released from his temple prison in 1985 (see the Blast Door Map), Richard never ages, Locke revives (like Obi-Won Kenobi's ghost), Ben is mad at Jacob, Jack tries to find Claire and Aaron, Christian talks to Jack, Widmore returns to the Island by Ajira Airways by landing on Hydra Island and rowing to the shore and shooting at the Left-Behinders, Widmore and Ben go after the Temple to control the island, Jacob and the ghosts influence our losties to protect the island and prevent the end of the world by changing the course of the future so that time on earth does not start over from day one. (Lost was or! iginally going to be called The Circle)
