The island is officially alive. in the scene where the other hotter french chick is thrown back dead, we see the "smoke monster" for several seconds as a giant leaning tree. It then shoots straight up into the sky. There is a growl and the island throws the girl down. The manifestation of the smoke monster must just be the roving consciousness of this living island.
also notice locke doesnt bleed at all.
the island seems to have some very subjective power over virtually anything, anywhere. the immensity of this power is something to consider. how macro are the writers really getting? are we talking about an inter temporal, powerful, but not all powerful being? This beings name seems as likely to be Jacob, as Ms Hawking's first name is to be ellie.
Who read or saw hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy?
There we have inter temporal beings whose physical manifestations in this dimension look like small white mice. Maybe the island is the physical manifestation of such a being. Or further maybe the different elements of the island are the physical representations of several different extra dimensional beings, possibly playing a game with time and space.
