I think throughout the show we have seen Present Locke have help from Future Locke.
The examples of this are when Locke has the dream about seeing the plane crash that Eko's brother was on in the episode Because You Left. Locke witnesses the plane crashing and actually goes to where it crashes and inspects it. That is why Locke had the dream because future Locke has seen it and the memory is stored in his brain.
In the episode The man from Tallashee, Locke appears on the marina. I think that Future Locke (maybe another dream/vision) has told present Locke that he needs to blow up the submarine because if Jack and co do leave the island then it will change everything that has happened and you arent really supposed to change anything.
I belive that Locke is Jacob and Jacob is future Locke who is stuck in the past. This is becuase in season 3 - The Man Behind The Curtain. Locke visits Jacob but is unable to see him, this is because it is his future self (who is now a ghost form) who has now been transported into the past. Because his death has not yet happened, he (and everyone else) cannot see him as Jacob is the Ghost version of himself. Jacob says Help me but Locke hears this, not Ben. This is because he is saying it to himself in his head. The reason Ben shoots Locke is because Jacob isnt supposed to communicate with anyone but Ben as it could ruin the whole thing as it is disasterious if present locke was to meet his future self as he will know what will happen.
He has another dream in Cabin Fever, where he meets Horace Goodspeed. He tells Locke to go to the pit where all the previous Dharma people are buried. Again with the plane incident his future self is going to meet Horace Goodspeed and be around when all the Dharma people are killed so again he will have these memories stored in his head.
Following on from the memories stored. In the episode The House Of The Rising Sun, when Jack, Kate & Locke are in the caves. It is Locke who gives the skeletons the name Adam and Eve, I think he calls them this obviously because it is a male and female but also because he knows who te identitys of them are and knows that they are indeed a couple, a modern day (well past day) Adam and Eve.
I apologise if the post is long and I also hope you understand what I am meaning when I talk about each reasoning. Theory by Lost_Lives_On
