The introduction of time skipping/travel in the fifth season has given a new perspective to all previous events on Lost. The little things we noticed from the start now become important pieces of the puzzle.
One of the scenes that always stuck with me from the second I saw it was the scene with Jack and Desmond in the Stadium.
Knowing what we know now about Desmond, re-watch this scene:

This scene is brilliantly written. First off we see Jack trying to catch up with Desmond (could be important imagery) and stumbling. Desmond's first line "you alright brother?", now wouldn't that be something? We no nothing of his parents other than he dropped out of University to support his 3 brothers after something happened involving his father (flashes before your eyes). We know that Christian certainly gets around and wouldn't that be a great twist.
As Desmond helps Jack with his ankle, Jack asks how he knows about sprains, to which he reply's "I was almost a doctor once". Now how can this be? We know no evidence of him ever training to be a doctor. Here is 4 crazy possibility's
a) This is Desmond in the future, he knows Jack is a doctor and he is making common ground with so he remembers meeting with him
b) Desmond has changed the future before and was once a doctor (or maybe even Jack)
c) Desmond can harness the healing properties of the island and heals Sarah
d) Desmond is a healer/doctor of time ;)
They then go on to talk about why Jack is running. Desmond eerily preempts each response and almost answers for him. Jack tells how he promised to fix Sarah when he couldn't. Desmond thinks for a second, and reply's "but what if you did fix her" twice, almost as if he has the power to do so.
Then here is the killer line for me as Desmond offers to give Jack one bit of advice:
"you have to lift it up" (Cue long dramatic pause to make sure you heard it)
It means nothing as yet, but it will towards the end of the show. Just look at the swagger in Desmond's eyes Throughout the scene. Definatly one to remember for the future.
Then we hear one of the most loved lines of the show "Good luck brother, I'll see you in another life yeah"
My theory from this is that Jack, being the lead in the show from the start, is destined to either save the world, or be part of destroying it. There seems to be a deep connection between Desmond and Jack. My theory is that Jack must go back to the island, go back to the hatch and become Desmond's replacement in pushing the button, and "saving the world". Or perhaps he is Radzinsky? Either that or he is 'special' like Desmond and has to change things. Theory by Fate Found
