---ORIGINAL THEORY---
I watched This Place Is Death today and I had to draw some immediate parallels between what happened to Robert, Lacome etc and what is currently happening to Claire and I think, Christian.
We all know Montand got his arm severed, what we didn't know is that is was physically pulled off by a Smokey vs. Rousseau's Team + Jin tug of war. Immediately after this, Montand is dragged under what can only be assumed as The Temple that Ben was talking to Richard and Locke about.
Yet, after this seemingly painful experience, a few seconds later Montand appears to be quite calm about the whole situation. I dont know about you, but if someone just yanked off my arm, I wouldn't be shouting for my friends that "Im hurt" and they should "Help me" by coming into the hole that a mysterious cloud of black smoke just dragged me into. Yet, here he is, doing just that.
Unfortunately we don't see what happens as the damn island jumps just as the rescue crew head into the hole.
Next we see Robert, who is holding a gun and arguing with Danielle. She's screaming that it's not him and that Smokey had "changed" him, she called it The Sickness. Robert also has this calm demeanor that Montand had after he'd just had his arm ripped off, while staring into the barrel of a gun.
Again, if I were Robert and my pregnant girlfriend was threatening to shoot me, I'd not be as calm as he was, and I certainly wouldn't attempt to shoot her.
You may be wondering where all of this is going, but Claire in Season 4's Cabin Fever seems to be portraying all of the symptoms of having "The Sickness". She is calm, collective and is almost as if she has been possessed.
OK, here comes the theory:
Smokey possesses people. Not just alive and well people, dead people, and uses them to try and protect the island and The Temple.
We haven't seen it yet but there must be something at The Temple of major importance if it has Smokey as it's Security System.
Personally, I think Smokey has also discovered the corpse of Christian and is using him to relay instructions. And if Christian is who he says he is:
Locke: "Are you Jacob?"
Christian/Smokey-Possessed: "No, but I can speak on his behalf."
...then Jacob may be...Smokey.
I don't buy it, but this could be where the writer's are going. Jacob is trying to protect the island, so is Smokey, are they one in the same?
Back to Claire, I think she will play an important part in Season 6 as the Smokey-Possessed Lostie. Maybe she will even be the way the writer's explain Smokey (finally) to the viewers?
Holes in this Theory:
-If Smokey possesses people, then can he possess more than one person at once?
--If not, how come Christian AND Claire are together in the Cabin, both seemingly under Smokey's control.
--If not, how come all of Danielle's team ended up "changing"?
-Does Smokey only possess the dead, and Claire actually did die when the house blew up?
-If this is true, did Smokey kill all of the Science Team when they went into the hole, as a means to possess them?
This has turned out to be a lot longer than I thought, but please feel free to rip these idea's apart (much like Montand's arm) and leave comments.
---UPDATE---
The comments on my original theory made me think a bit, and I've come up with some ideas that hopefully plug a few holes!
Maybe Smokey=Jacob is a bit too far, I mention in the above theory that whatever is in The Temple but be of much importance, if Smokey is not Jacob himself and he is in fact just a security system like Robert and Danielle say, perhaps he is protecting Jacob, who is at The Temple.
More likely, I think he is protecting Jacob's Tomb/Corpse which is located at The Temple. The glimpse we saw of Jacob in the Cabin could be a manifestation of Smokey.
There's a few minor SPOILERS ahead for people who haven't heard the Podcast for This Place Is Death:
Darlton mention that they will definitely be returning to the place that Smokey pulled Montand to, assumed to be The Temple, and that we have just seen the outskirts of it. I for one think the island has stopped in a time pre-Dharma (no Well or Orchid) and this Temple definitely predates Dharma, so it will be there no matter what timeline our Left-Behinders are in.
Now a smaller theory on how the Losties will come to find 'The Temple' that Jin/Danielle have visited:
Sawyer, Juliet or Miles are attacked by Smokey and pulled into a Smokey Hole/Cerberus Vent. Jin knows where they will be taken to, and takes them back to 'The Temple'. They'll explore a bit and find Jacob, possibly alive or dead, Claire or Christian, who'll give us a bit of info on Smokey/Jacob.
Again, feel free to rip this apart.
Thank you again for your time
