I've been reading theories all day and the more I read,the more confused I get. I have a short simple theory I feel to be accurate.
Christian Shepard is misleading Locke!
Why would CS do this? Well I think it's safe to say that he is not actually Christian Shepard but the smoke monster we all know and love.The evidence of this, is that clearly smokey is BAD, he kills in cold blood. He displays all characteristics of anyone we have seen apparently "possesed" by smokey. For this case then, Claire is also smokey, the french crew,yemi, even Waaaaaaaaalt was a form of smokey at times.
So what is smokey's agenda, well the exact opposite of Jacobs of course. Who does Locke trust and follow?...Jacob! Who better to claim to be or speak on the behalf of then Jacob in order to get Locke to do what you want, while at the same time, getting Locke as far away from the island as possible!
This plan backfired for smokey however, while smokey was visiting the O6 off the island, via CS and Claire, Locke was also visiting them to warn them they need to go back to save the rest of the losties. He finally gets killed by ben or sayid working for ben, ben did this knowing the only way to get John back to the island and finally talk to Jacob,is dead so he can talk with the other dead people on the island(confused myself too.)
Quick note:Claire said, don't you dare bring him back!, she means back from the dead, you aren't supposed to RAISE him...from the dead, evidence of this is the van ben drives...Canton Rainier, or Reincarnation...dun dun dun
Finally I'll just say, once Locke gets back and talks to Jacob, he'll realise he was tricked by smokey into doing the wrong thing time and time again, then he'll lead the others to doing good things blah blah blah.... Ben saves the day because he always has a plan!
