Changing the Numbers Theory – 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42
By: NJROEN
My theory is that… 4,8,15,16,23,42 are all tied to individual characters on the show. For example Jack = 23. Because that is the row he was sitting in on the plane, because Psalm 23 says, “The Lord is my Sheppard”. Rousseau might = 16 because that is how long she was on the Island. 42 could = Kate because her address is 42 Panorama Crest. I don’t know who is which number yet, but you get the idea.
Now let me give you some back story. So from the Hanso Foundation Video, we know that Enzo Valenzetti was the person who originally came up with the numbers as “the end result of a study commissioned by the United Nations following the Cuban Missile Crisis to determine the exact date the world would end.” Enzo Valenzetti (http://www.valenzettifoundation.org/) was born on the Island of Sardinia (which has ties to Ramses and Egypt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sardinia) also if you look at the map of the LOST island and the map of the Island of Sardinia they are VERY similar but with some differences. Here compare the two…

.”
Ok enough back story to chew on, now the theory. Each number is tied to a certain character on the show. Since Hanso was trying to change one of those core numerical values to prevent the end of the world, the same is true for our characters. So basically people like; Ben, Hawking, Widmore, Abbadon, Jacob, Christian Sheppard have been trying to change the events in those 6 people’s lives in order to prevent the end of the world/or the island being discovered/or what ever the even ends up being. So we are going to see from here on out people trying to change people’s pasts. Here is where the ‘RULES OF THE GAME’ come in. Ben, Abbadon, Hawking, Widmore, and Christian Sheppard all know the rules, and my guess is that those rules are…
1. You cannot force anyone to do anything (Why Christian couldn’t help Locke move)
2. You CAN persuade or convince them to choose something different though. (Abbadon telling Locke he should do the walkabout, or Mrs. Hawking telling Desmond not to buy the ring.)
3. You cannot kill anyone to prevent them from doing something. (This is why Ben says they broke/changed the rules after Alex is killed by McKemy)
So in the end of the show they will change one of the numbers or more of the numbers and one of two things will happen…
1. The last thing we see is flight 815 crashing all over again.
2. Flight 815 never crashes at all.
As far as plot goes though, I know Dalton are tying the story telling motif very close to ‘The Watchmen’. Which in the end of the Watchmen everything you were paying attention to the whole time wasn’t even the real issue of what was going on the entire story. So for all we know this show is really a murder mystery about finding out what happened to Enzo Valenzetti, Gary Troup, or Harold Wollstein. With that being said I will leave you with these bits of information that lean towards that idea. We have gathered these bits from the alternate reality games/media that LOST’s creators have put out there, here they are…
“Also we know that “Compounding the mystery is Valenzetti's steadfast refusal to discuss his work (he is best known for allegedly torching his proof of Fermat's last theorem after it was verified by a group of colleagues). Valenzetti’s mysterious death and Gary Troup's disappearance (and presumed death) on Oceanic Airlines flight 815, which was lost over the pacific on September 2004”
“Do you remember Flight 815, the plane that mysteriously disappeared on its way from Sydney to LA? In seat 23-C sat Harold Wollstein, who was poised to lead the next wave of digital technology. The man that would make a watch-sized blackberry a thing of the present joined the fate of the other 400+ passengers.”
