Here is a quick theory, going back to the Evil Twin book and based upon the new developments and connections of Jughead.
What if Charles Widmore gets Ellie pregnant on the island. She is pregnant with boy/girl twins. They end up leaving the island to have the babies. Then they have a falling out and Ellie keeps the boy, Daniel, and changes his last name because she doesn't want anything to do with Widmore any more. Charles Widmore keep the girl, Penny. Then they are both trying, in their own way, to get back to the island. She figures it out, but he doesn't. Or she cooperates with Richard Alpert, who in turn recruits Ben, kills all of the Dharma people (who are also loyal to Charles Widmore) and keeps Charles from coming back to the island. This doesn't all completely add up, because since if Charles Widmore knows where Ellie/Eloise Hawking is (Los Angeles), he must know that she knows how to get back to the island, so why doesn't he just spy on her to figure it out? Or is she such a "private person" that he can't possibly spy on her? Anyway, I should probably post it in theories section, it j! ust all came to me as I was typing here...
Another theory: Ellie and Charles Widmore are twins. One is the evil twin. Which one? This also makes Daniel Faraday and Penny first cousins (if Daniel is Eloise's son). I'm too tired to develop this idea right now, but something to think about. Either theory also explain why Widmore would sponsor Faraday's research. Theory by Julia S.
