According to Faraday "it has already happened and that is why time can not be altered". However, it appears as some things have already been altered i.e. Alex dying and Widmore changing the rules. However, what if some things were so important that if they were to change, it would mean certain doom for the Island and possibly the world.
Before, I get into my theory I'd like to reemphasise "the world" angle. Hawking told Linus that he only had seventy hours to get the six back or it would be disastrous. It could be the end of the world. I believe this end of the world would be caused by a time paradox.
The others and hostiles came from somewhere, but where? Many believe they are from an alien race or that they were on the Black Rock ship. However, my theory goes for a different approach. I believe the others are the offspring and descendents of the Losties. I believe that the Losties, traveling through time, eventually end up stuck in the past. This "past island" would have no inhabitants and they would be free to start their own civilization. This would be the origin of the others.
However something very important is missing, Jack and the O6. Many have already hinted that Jack could be Jacob (Jack is a short form of Jacob after all). Wouldn't it make since that the others great leader of the age would have been someone who was the leader of their ancestors. Without the O6 in place the others would not exist. This is a major problem for the Island. It needs them to be there or the timeline will not be fulfilled, hence the paradox.
Even more important to this end seems to be the Shepard line. Jack must return to the island. He needs to fulfil his destiny, much like Christian has already told him. Also, it appears his nephew is of great importance (maybe the next leader of the others). In fact, in the first episode, Claire says that she hasn't felt the baby kick for a while and feared he had died. What if Aaron had died and it was through the island's mystical power and preservence of the time line that Aaron was brought back to life in the womb.
Granted this theory, i'm sure, has holes in it, but it is a very sound theory. The others have to come from somewhere. Also, what could be a more important reason for the O6 to return than to stop a time paradox. Besides, there is an Adam and Eve in the cave, and many believe its some of the Oceanic Losties. What do you think? Is it possible or am I in a psychiatrist's office imaging all this... Theory by Jack=Jacob
