One of the mysteries that intrigued me the most and is still haunting me, is: What's up with the whispers??
Some people claim that that question is allready answered: it's the Others in trees (as heard in the S4 finale right before they attacked Keamy and co.. But I don't believe that is the correct answer, especially after watching the S5 premiere, 'The Lie'.
The theories about the Whispers, over the years, belonged to the most crazy, wacky, but at the same time most genuisly and interesting ones. Some of the proposed possibilities were: They are the smoke monster (mostly accompanied by the theory that the smoke monster is one or more Djinns), they are the others, the hostiles, the magnetic remnants of the people that died on the island (one I still believe in because of the actual content of the whispers), the Losties in another dimension, 'shining through' in a Jacob-like way. All interesting, but the S5 premiere sparked a new idea:
With the left behinders on the skipping-record island travelling back and forth in time, it is bound to happen that at some point, they arrive at a time after 815 crashed, but before they )6 left. In fact, I think they allready did: when Daniel confronted Desmond, that is most likely after he killed Kelvin -and caused the plane to crash- because before that time he never went outside of the Hatch, not even with a hazmat suit on. How convenient it was that that flash was only short, not long enough for the others to reach the beach camp.
Because think of it: it is most likely that when they end up between sept. 2004 and jan. 2005, the left-behinders would encounter themselves or some other losties and freak them out. But that didn't happen on the show up till now. And as Daniel neatly explained to us: whatever happened, happened. No changing the past (and no paradox).
Although the left-behinders got lucky this time, they are be bound to run into the island-time losties at some point. So what will prevent that? I have two theories on that:
1. The island prevents changing the past by flashing just in time before something can happen that will alter the past/future (i.e. the losties and the left behinders meeting each other). I'm on the fence with that. A possible big clue is the convenient flash-moment when Ethan was about to shoot Locke. Talking about saved by the bell...(on a side-note: I have the idea that this encounter might have sparked the interest of the Others for Locke in earlier seasons. Because when Ben becomes their leader, and Ethan connects the dots and informs the others, everyone must think that Locke is chosen and special (to them it seams like he has the power to disappear).
But, back on topic, the other flashes didn't seem so purposely timed, and Daniel metaphorically talked of the island as a skipping record (so, out of control).
2. What if they can't run into each other, period, by a phenomenon that occurs so that the time-travel rules stay obeyed. What if that phenomenon is that when the leftbehinders encounter the Losties, the Losties can't see them. What if they only hear strange whispers....?
So, which theory do you think is true? Or are they both true? Or do you have an other theory about this matter. I'm really curious.
And god, how I missed LOST!
