Hey Losties, I’ve got some new stuff, some old stuff and some revised thoughts in this one, but I hope you like it. Please comment and let me know what you think.
Locke’s destiny has already been fulfilled, and we saw it in the episode Live Together, Die Alone at the end of Season 2, along with so many other secrets about the island. Locke is the one who destroyed the computer in the Swan station, which is what led to Desmond turning the failsafe key. By destroying that computer, an act that was done in frustration, Locke saved the world. Desmond then did the only truly great thing he was ever going to do in life by turn that key. Even when Locke was destroying the computer he said that he was more sure about doing it than anything else in his entire life.
I believe that the hatch turnsafe mechanism was designed to destroy the Swan station using some sort of radiation explosion, just incase the numbers were not entered. When the Dharma Initiative built the Swan station, they ended up making it a conductive plate on a location of great electromagnetic energy, which turned it into a huge capacitor. The capacitor built up a charge that would get out of control, so it had to be discharged, thus the computer with the numbers. If the hatch is destroyed however, then there is no more charge being built up because the capacitor is destroyed.
When Desmond turned the failsafe key, the combination of the radiation explosion and the electromagnetic properties of the island created the purple sky, which is the same type of light that Daniel Faraday shined over Eloise to get through the maze before being taught how to do so. Well it turns out that this light was the cure, but not after causing some problems first.
I think of the island as an organism, a living being. Perhaps the island is an alien with technology and power that far exceeds our own. That’s a whole other theory though. When the Swan was destroyed and the purple sky was seen, the island became susceptible to jumps through time in the midst of certain electromagnetic anomalies. Just like we saw with Desmond in the episode The Constant, the island needs a constant, and the island’s constant is the people that were on the island when the Swan station was destroyed and the purple sky occurred. This is why certain people will travel with the island when it makes its jumps through time. Since the O6 were on the island when the Swan exploded, the reason they have to go back is because the island became unstuck in time when it was moved, and everyone on the island will get bloody noses and die like Minkowski if they don’t get back and let the island settle into a single timeframe.
There may also exceptions that the island will not bring people with it to a time where they can encounter themselves, or natives who are at the Temple, which is supposedly a safe place. The possibility of someone running into themselves during a different timeline has basically been debunked by the writers, as they are adverse to the types of paradoxes we see in Heroes, but it is still possible on some level. When Pierre Chang did his bunny demonstration for the Orchid training video, they had two bunnies and he was screaming not to let them near each other. There is also the case of the Desmond/Penny picture…when they took the picture Penny paid 5 quid for just one copy of that picture, but we have seen Desmond with a copy of it, Penny with a copy by her bed and Naomi had a copy as well (which she got from Abaddon I believe).
Now the numbers…I’m sure you all have seen the video from The Lost Experience that talks about the numbers and the Valenzetti equation, but here’s the rundown for reference. The numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 are the core values of the Valenzetti equation, which predicts the end of mankind and all of humanity. The DeGroots and Alvar Hanso assembled the Dharma Initiative to change those core values of the equation in hopes to extend our existence here on earth. No matter what the DI scientists did, they could not change any of the core values.
Go back and check out the episode LTDA when the Swan station is destroyed, it flashes on just about every character to show their reaction. Ben even seems to have this look on his face like he knew it was coming, that the failsafe eventually would be turned and a purple sky would occur. When it’s all done, the hatch door goes flying down to the beach next to Claire and it says “Quarantine.” I think this is an easter egg to indicate that all of those people are now to be quarantined to the island. I think Ben had a visitor from the future when he was younger (or maybe Jacob), who told him that the failsafe key would have to be turned to set in motion a chain of events that would ultimately change one of the core values of the Valenzetti equation, saving humanity. Ben was also exposed to the purple light, but he is the one who turned the frozen donkey wheel as well, so that may have something to do with his ability to know so much. Either way, I think that Ben’s ! constant is his little doll that he got from Annie as a kid, and he knows how important this constant is, which is why he is able do what he can do.
It was the act of destroying the computer that led to Desmond turning the key that led to the purple sky that led to the time/space influxes that ultimately changed the results of the Valenzetti equation. Despite all of their efforts, the DI could not directly change the equation, but their existence led to the events that did. Everything had to happen just the way it did. The DI had to build the Swan station that would bring in the plane full of survivors and help create the purple sky that became the cure. The DI also had to build the Orchid station to be a catalyst to the time/space influxes.
Ben knew that everything had to happen just they way it did. He knew about the Swan station and that the failsafe key had to be turned and Locke had to be involved. We know he knew about the Swan station because he was making a delivery to the Pearl station before the purge with his dad in Man Behind the Curtain. If Ben knew about the Pearl, or had been there, then he also knew about the Swan station.
Overall, the most important life saving event of LOST has already taken place, and it was the destruction of the Swan. LTDA has so many clues in it, and I notice more each time I see it. There is also the scene where Desmond is discharged from the Queens army and gets his copy of “Our Mutual Friend” by Charles Dickenson. The officer giving him his possessions mentions that it’s a good idea to read the book before he dies, as long as he knows when he’s going to die. I think this is a hint that Desmond will eventually die, but he will know (because of his time jumping issues) and he will be able to read the book shortly before it happens. There’s also a hint for hope that the O6 will return by Penny…”With enough resources and determination, you can find anyone.” As for LTDA, I’m still not sure what to make of the 4-toad statue, the medicine injections and the Hurley Bird though, especially the Hurley Bird. ;)
