I've come to the conclusion that the Island is what balances time in the universe. It is the constant for the world. If it was found and destroyed then this would destroy time all together. The leader of the island whoever it may be, Widmore, Ben, Richard, or Jacob, controls all time and can change it as they wish. The reason why they have to get back to the island is because I believe that in the past Ben has experienced everything before to the plane crashing, the Freighter and anything else that has happened before Widmore changed the rules. By Widmore changing the rules, this allowed the Oceanic Six to leave. They were not supposed to leave because they were supposed to continue on living on the island with no way to get off. I feel this is what Ben experienced in the past and why he was so persuasive in trying to get them to stay. Ben then knew he had to move the island back in time to try and do everything ! all over again the right way. By moving it back in time, Ben can still come to power over the island because his younger self will still be on the island. When the Oceanic Six get back they will have to move the island again but instead into the future, the person who will move it will be John Locke and time jump him to the days as Jeremy Bentham when he tells them they have to go back. Once he gets back he will not be able to walk, see the Oceanic Six and he will be told by Abbadon that his duty is over, and then he will kill himself. Just a thought.
