Season 5's opening epi has just confirmed the vile vortices theory for me.
When Locke is in the open field and sees Yemi's plane crash, the Island would have to be in the vile vortex near Zimbabwe. Following that line of thought and the vortices theory, stay with me now, Ben moved the Island from the Loyalty Island area or vortex 45 "The edge of the Hebrides Trench near the Fiji Islands" to vortex 41 "The Zimbabwe Megaliths" near Zimbabwe. Ben then ended up in the Sahara Desert near vortex 20 "The Algerian Megalithic Ruins".
As we see the flash, the Island moves again and again.
This would also explain why there were polar bears on the island from the North Pole vortex and how the Black Rock ended up in the middle of the island. The Island moved to the North Pole vortex to pick up the polar bears at one point and later was moved back to our more familiar location, the Loyalty Island area. When appearing in the Loyalty Island area, it appeared UNDER the Black Rock when it was out in the ocean, placing it in the middle of the jungle.
Finally, this would also explain why the polar bear with the Dharma collar was in Tunisia and Penny's men found the Island when they were located in the Antarctic vortex.
Where will the Island travel to next? The South Atlantic Anomaly near Rio de Janeiro? Cool!
