So, I was just watching the season 1 finale, Exodus, and got to the point where Danielle crept into the beach camp, and approached our Losties. As they all stood around, most of them bemused by the frenchwoman, she exclaimed "The Other's are coming". This got me thinking...
There have been a couple of times that Danielle has exerted some strange behaviour, such as the time when she interupted Mikhail when he was about to mention he knew Locke had been paralised, amongst other things, which makes me think she knows more than She's letting on. Also If I recall correctly, it was mentioned that the original script for Solitary had Sayid ask Danielle what exactly her science team was researching, and she exclaimed "time."
Let's say Rousseau knew more than she was letting on, let's say she met some of the Losties who have been flashing through time when she was younger, and lets say she was aware of their plight, and the dangers that they may face if they ever accidently flashed to a period of time where their past selves were still on the beach...this would be extremely dangerous, right?
Therefore I speculate that the "Others" who were coming at the end of season 1, were the future castaways that were flashing through time, and the only way that they could avoid themselves, was for Rousseau to scare them all off the beach, and into the caves so they didn't come face to face with themsleves and cause a paradox(like some sort of time-cop).
Having said that, it still doesn't explain the black smoke on the horizon, and other stuff, so it could becomplete bo**ocks.
