So the first bright flash that everyone saw when the "switch" got thrown- perhaps it set the island on an incorrect path and because everyone on the island was affected by it, they actually couldn't leave because they were not in the "correct" time. Remember how things seemed to change after that- Charlie was an award winning swimmer, and then suddenly he couldn't swim well, etc... and the dead Charlie that visited Hurley was better looking and successful- different, because in dying in in the incorrect timeline, sent him to the one he was meant to be in. Anna-Lucia is back in the correct one and is a happy, successful police officer. Locke died so he could be returned to the original timeline, (not sure how this one works.) But Jack is unsuccesful, Kate is a bad mom, Sun is cruel, Sahyed is working for Ben- but there is Hurley- one who cannot give in to being different than he was meant to be, so he put himself ! in a mental hospital.
I'm not convinced it was in making better choices, redemption, led to their demise= other than in dying they could, in effect, "reset" and join the correct time- hence Charlie saying he was dead, but also there. Desmond could see the future, as it were, but perhaps it was more that he could do the time jumps without being affected, so he retained the memory of those events. And if Miles actually was the baby from 30 years ago, he can as well, which would explain how he knew the boar died exactly three hours ago and where to go get it.
