If you think about what endings would fit to this show, you’re really left with 3 options. One is that everybody goes back to the real world, two is that everybody stays on the island, and three is that a few primary characters make sacrifices so that the others can leave the island. Let’s think about the possibilities.
#2: Everybody stays on the Island: I’m struggling to see how this could make sense. It seems with the whole “destiny” aspect of the show that all of them are destined to stay, but for what? The only way this happens is that if it is revealed that they must stay in order to protect whatever final secret of ultimate purpose is revealed about the island. Perhaps they are the parents of the hostiles and thus must be there in the past to give birth to them or else create a paradox, who knows. Something like this could be the case, but my problem with it though is that almost nobody would get what they really want. It’d be hard to have an ending where everybody realized they had to stay no matter what, and fade to black. Possible yes, but I just can’t imagine it.
#1: Everybody leaves the Island: This to me is somewhat more likely. It gives everybody the chance to have a happy if not bitter sweet ending where they go home to their lives, relieved of the burdens they carried with them at the beginning of the show and able to start living happy lives with their shady pasts fully behind them. All it would take for this to be accomplished is for the “purpose” of each lostie to be that they have to fix something on the island that is finite. Finite meaning, once it’s fixed, it’s done, and they’re no longer bound to the island. I’d say this is likely, but something seems amiss if everybody simply comes home. And how big of a problem could it have been, and why were these people bound to it, if it’s easily fixable.
#3: Some make sacrifices: I can’t see how this isn’t the ultimate answer. We already know that Locke has died, and it’d be very Shakespearean for Jack to die at least and possibly Kate. Not to mention other leads like Charlie have made the ultimate sacrifice already. If people like Hurley, Jack, and Sawyer have to die to save the others, it would make for a tragic but fitting end, and would indeed give purpose to their characters. It would also explain why we’ve still only met like 20 or the original 48 passengers, since only a few are actually important, and the others merely provide motivation. With this type of ending, we’ll have ultimate deaths, an ultimate rescue, reunions, morning, shock, relief, the whole gambit.
So I’m going to predict that format of the ending will be #3 above. But what of the details? Who lives? Who dies?
I think Jack and Sawyer are spot on to die, but Jack for sure. Sawyer could be the ultimate person of redemption and go home to a much better life. I think the answer for him will be the question of what happens to the love triangle. Kate has not found a man of balance, and that is a big plot point that’s faded a bit with no solution. She has always had two extremes in Jack and Sawyer. If Sawyer does become the ultimate person of redemption then she will have her medium and go home with him.
In a different point, but one that I think will be related is Adam & Eve. I can’t imagine that these aren’t a pair of the losties, not now that we know about the Island going back in time. And if it is a pair of losties, it’s almost assuredly Jack and another female. That female, if Kate goes with Sawer, is Juliet. Really, they’re perfect for each other and Juliet could certainly be a character to make a sacrifice. The two women could be switched depending on Sawyer and Juliet’s progressing relationship, but if Sawyer turns out to be the redeemed character, I think the relationships match better the other way. Some say Locke is Adam, but if that’s true, who would you possibly consider to be Eve? I can’t think of anyone, and I can’t imagine Adam & Eve are lesser characters, not even Desmond and Penny.
Desmond and Penny are the happy couple, the ones you’ve been rooting on to be together always, so in the end, I’d bet money they wind up together off the Island in the happily ever after scenario. Sawyer and Kate won’t quite embrace the lovey dovey angle this relationship will have.
As for Locke. I honestly think he’ll turn out to be bad. Not intentionally, but he’ll be used and die. If you think about it, the man is a coward. I love him, but he’s been a sucker his entire life, and even on the Island where he appears so tough and confident, all he does is follow the orders or something he admittedly doesn’t understand. I don’t know if you want to call it conned, but he’s certainly being used and he’ll die because he doesn’t live on principle. He’s a sheep.
I think the babies, especially Aaron, and possibly Walt and Ji-Yon will stay on the Island, but alive. I don’t know what is meant by them being “special” but I’m going to speculate that they are apart of some time loop or important to the initial part of Dharma or the Hostiles. I say this because they’re too young to be significant to the story now, and so they’re only significance would be when they grow up. If they grew up in modern times, they wouldn’t be old until well after the events of season 6, but if they grew up in the past they would be old enough to impact the lives of either Dharma or the Hostiles, take your pick. I don’t see what the point would be in having them die or leave the island. Neither of those outcomes would label them as “special”.
Ben I think will die. I say this because I think he’s good, and I think he’s been pushing the buttons all along to get everybody to do everything they’ve done up until this point. I think he knows what will ultimately happen, I think he knew that Locke would take his place, I think he manipulated all the others to leave. Why? Because getting them to stand against him, or to be in a compromised position, motivates them to do for themselves what he wanted them to do in the first place, but they wouldn’t have done if he’d just asked them or forced them. I just can’t see him leaving the Island, although perhaps he stays in the past. If he does it’d be for some important reason where he’d almost certainly be seen as important. Possibly even enough to raise a statue to????
Hurley is lovable enough to be a tragic character, but they couldn’t kill Hurley. He’ll go home to be with his family, finally free of his curse.
Sayid. I really don’t know about him. I don’t see any reason to kill him or for him to go home. The love of his life is dead, and I don’t know that he has any family. I also don’t see why he’d stay in the past. I love the guy, but I have no idea what’s so important about him.
Those already dead, especially Christian and Claire will remain that way and be with Jack after his death. Eko and Yemi will be shown as redeemed from their past lives. I guess Charlie may be with Claire, but much like Sayid I can’t see much more reason for him to even be there. Shannon and boon can eat it for all I care.
Rose and Bernard though are interesting. If the finally reveals they get to go home, can Rose live off the Island cancer free? If so they’ll leave happily. If not they may stay in the past. Either way their story will end affectionately but indifferently. They’ve always been an afterthought.
Sun and Jin. Now that’s interesting. I for one believe that Jin jumped off the freighter. I say this, because if you look at whose left on the Island, there aren’t a lot of big names, and Locke isn’t a part of those on the beach. If Jin made it, it would add some star power to the Islanders and create a fantastic and surprising reunion when he meats Sun again. Plus we all like them as a couple and could see them sail away happy together on the mainland. Now that I think about it, I say they keep Ji-Yon with them. If Jin didn’t live, then I have no idea what happens to Sun and it seems like the whole relationship built between the two was for naught. He’s alive.
Widmore? I don’t know. I’d say he dies, though not gallantly. He’s a bad guy. Does anybody want to see him win? He couldn’t possibly have a good ending.
And that’s it for now. I base all of these predictions on what makes sense story wise. There are just certain things some characters could do or not do. Jack isn’t going to just go home and be alone for instance, so I just thought I’d take a look at where each character could logically wind up. What say you?
