This is a revision of my first theory "the valenzetti solution" Please comment! I think this theory explains a lot of whats going on. the more I think about it, the more sense it makes.
In the Sri Lanka Video, we are given the true meaning of the numbers. They are the core variables of an equation commissioned by The United Nations after the Cuban Missle Crisis, during the cold war. This equation, by Dr. Enzo Valenzetti, determined through mathematics the exact date of the end of humanity. Thus was born the Valenzetti equation, and we know the numbers of the six key variables, 4 8 15 16 23 42.
What we haven't been told, is the solution... or have we?
As Alvar Hanso states in the video, the results are chilling. Chilling indeed.
What if, when they got the answer, they realized that the world was supposed to end tomorrow? or even worse, It already should have ended?
This is what I believe happened: Dharma was founded in an attempt to postpone Apocalypse. Their primary goal was to alter the timeline and avoid destruction at all costs, and to somehow change one of the variables in the equation through science, thus changing our fate.
Problem is, you can't change the future... it has a way of "course correcting"
That's where Jacob comes in. Jacob, was someone very special. He found a way to use the powers of the island to "unstick" himself from our current time line, but still somehow be able to affect it through other people. He averted disaster, but had to sacrifice himself to do so. He now exists slightly askew from our time line, acting through intermediaries. Whatever caused this is probably the incident Pierre Chang refers to.
This saving the plane buisness likely involves some sort of time travel, or conciousnesses traveling across time in order to manipulate events in such a ay as to avert disaster for as long as possible. It's quite likely this has caused some sort of paradox and gotten the world stuck in some sort of time loop.
Here's where it gets crazy...
Remember how desmond (or his conciousness) could see into the future? He used this power to try and save charlie, by changing the future, but fate kept "course correcting" and eventually charlie died? Well, that's what Jacob has been doing, but for the whole entire world... Trying to avoid the course correction of impending apocalypse. Jacob is to the world as desmond is to charlie.
"He's our you"
I'm also going to wager that jack and Kate go back in time to the dharma days and eventually become the skeletons that John Locke named "adam and eve". Remember the black and white stones? Here's an interesting Paradox; If Jack got the stones (which he kept) from Adam, But Jack is Adam, so Adam got the stones from Jack... where did the stones come from? Reality is stuck in a looping paradox because they messed around with the timeline and tried to escape their fate. They're stuck in a time loop that plays out slightly differently each time, due to manipulation by jacob, ben, and anyone else who "gets it" and knows what the hell is happening. It's predestiny, but with slight room for changes.
Do you know that the original title of LOST was going to be? it was going to be called "The Circle"
In last story of Mystery Tales #40, "March has 32 Days" there is a story about a man playing a game, unearthed from an Egyptian Pharaohs tomb. Every time he plays the game, things change. The man he's playing it with has a different name, the new york skyline changes. Physical reality is altered. Each time, he wakes up and stasrts the day over, ala "groundhog day" untill he finally gets it right and things go back to normal. On the last page, they explain things, and use the phrase "Limitless Outcome of Similar Timelines" L.O.S.T.
So Jacob is playing a game of chess, the Island is the chessboard, and our Losties and the others are the chess pieces. The stakes? the continued existence of humanity.
