So, after what I believe to be a great episode, 5.03 with the revelation that Charles Widmore was a "hostile", it got me thinking about who else could've been on the island before, then it hit me.
First we must look into Daniels mother. I think it is safe to say that Eloise Hawking, or Ms Hawking is Daniels mother. From 5.02, we know Ms Hawking is in LA assisting Ben, and from 5.03, thanks to Charles Widmore, we also know that Faradays mother is also in LA. Connection? Possibly.
In Episode 4.05, The Constant, we meet Faraday and meet his lab rat, Eloise. The very fact that he named his lab rat this, possibly a nod to his mother, is more than enough proof in my opinion.
Now, Ms Hawking is that very important person who has shown up in desmonds flashbacks, explaining to him concepts of time travel, and not being able to change events or save peoples lives. She is also the same person who is helping Ben locate the island, so he and the Oceanic 6 can get back.
Now, for a woman to know how to find the island and also know about its properties, then it is very likely that she would have to have been on the island at some point in her life.

In 5.04, we meet Ellie, another "hostile". She comments on the fact that Daniel keeps staring at her, and he comments that she looks familiar. Hmm, she does sort of look like a very younger version of someone, don't you think;

I believe that Ms Hawking is Ellie from the island and the handbook he has all the information about the island and its properties is a possession that his mother passed down to him from her time on the island.
OMFG, what if Widmore is Faradays father.....that is for another theory though =]
