Ah yes, now it all makes sense. We've known for a long time that time travel is possible using the island. We know there was an incredible source of energy on the island making that possible. Last night, we finally found out what that source of energy is. It, of course, is JUG HEAD, the thermonuclear device placed on the island by the US Military for the purposes of testing. During that post-WWII era, there was a great deal of testing in the Pacific. Bikini Atoll is a famous test site out there.
Now you may wonder how this huge source of energy allows time travel. The location of the island lies in a peculiar area of the earth's gravitation field (remember the circa '80s lab, where the woman we believe is Faraday's mother was at a work station, with the instrumentation and so forth). Just like two ocean waves which get "into phase" can combine into a wave much larger than the sum of the two, the buried JUG HEAD's energy field, in phase with the earth's gravitational field, combine into an energy field much stronger than the sum of these two.
According Einstein's general theory of relativity, gravitation fields can not only attract mass, they can, commensurate with their intensity, bend light - we all know that this is what a black hole in space does. The other point relating to Einstein's theory is this: as a body approaches the speed of light, its mass increases towards infinity and time shrinks toward zero, RELATIVE to another body that is not so speedy. What we're still trying to understand is how the islands energy source affects different individuals. What is apparent though, is that this time travel capability seems to be different depending on how one comes to be on the island. Our heros timeline is a constant, with the island's time frame moving ahead or behind them. Richard, on the other hand, moves with the island. Daniel's group stays with our heros. I will be happy to go deeper into the general theory of relativity for any interested readers.?
Based on the above, here are two blockbuster theories that I have arrived at:
1. The Oceanic 6 must return to the island because they departed the island in a different mode than that in which they arrived, thus cause a "tear" in what is otherwise a wrinkle in the fabric of the space/time continuum.
2. That flash we're seeing - is actually some manner of detonation of JUG HEAD. In that instant in which the detonation occurs, there is a release of enough energy to move the island, and certain of those on it, through time. Actually, they're not moving through time so much as their passage of time, RELATIVE to our normal world, is altered. When Ben moved the Donkey wheel, he released the energy allowing the island move in time, but it is now erratically skipping through time.?
