I think desmond is "dead", ok maybe that's the wrong word, I think when he turned the fail safe he simply just ceased to be as a person, he sort of becomes a part of time itself and nothing more than someone who had to exist to course correct the past. I think he has to live so something can be made in the future that would otherwise be impossible.
This is hard to explain but I believe the desmond we know now is not the desmond that turned the fail safe, he has all of his memories from his former past, but now his former past is being re-written. Faraday is aware that desmond is the key to islands timeline. He states himself that "whatever happened, happened", but admits to desmond that "the rules don't apply to him". This however is a contradiction to what ms. Hawkins says when desmond turns the fail safe, she also claims that "you cant change the future". I would logically think that this was a warning to make desmond unaware he can actually change the past.
Faraday claims dessie is miraculous, special and unique. I think desmond is in fact the one who rules the game but is completely unaware that his past is still being created. By turning the fail safe I believe desmond can change the future, faraday is already aware of this and is acting on it by visiting desmond in the past.
Although I don’t believe Desmond’s whole past is being created I believe the for some reason that desmond is only able to change the future from 1996 onwards. This is why Ms Hawkins visits him in 1996, because he is becoming aware that he’s reliving his past, and she does not want desmond messing around with the future as the results could be catastrophic for “everyone”. Could it be coincidence that from 1996 to 2004

I think that desmond is unaware his past is being created, I believe that desmond is “him” and when he will go over his past subconsciously he will somehow know the answers to questions I.e. “what did the snowman say to the other snowman”, But I believe the island is flashing through time to allow his past to be re-written. I think that the oceanic 06 were supposed to be in the perimeter Faraday was talking about on the zodiac when the wheel was turned, I believe that everyone who was on the island when the fail safe was turned had to be on the island or dead. I don’t think Ben expected the oceanic 06 to be out of the perimeter when he turned the wheel which is why the island is floating through time, the island folk formed it’s constant and need to stay on the island to stop it drifting.
now the Island is drifting in time desmond is being re-written because the rules of course correction do not apply to him he is changing the future, by altering his past.
I believe desmond is actually in the process of being created/altered he could well be becoming Jacob, I know it sounds like any other Jacob theory out there but it does make sense. The first time I thought about this was after seeing Jacob’s eye in “man behind the curtain” and “the beginning of the end” , it is brown like desmonds is and it just looked more similar to desmonds to than any other character. I believe desmond is becoming Jacob, I believe he is subconsciously changing his past, by doing this he becomes part of the island able to change things and defy the rules of time that apply to the universe.
Ok, now thing back to Dessie’s flashes when he meets Jack at the stadium, he is tells Jack to believe in miracles and acts as if he knows Sarah will pull through the surgery “fixed”. This is because Desmond’s past is being re-written in the future and although he is aware that Sarah will pull through, he is not fully aware why.
Also Jacob can heal cancer, if desmond is Jacob could he have gone back to his past and somehow warned of Rachel’s cancer early or someway have prevented it from happening?
When Locke shines the torch in Jacob’s cabin didn’t it seem reminiscent of the “Doc” shining the light into desmonds eye that enabled him to drift consciously in “the constant”?
So all in all, is Desmond “him“? is his past being recreated to save the island or all of man kind in the future? Does Desmond actually still exist? Only time will tell, but it’s gonna be awesome finding out all the same.
