Theory Recap: The intervention into human affairs, to prevent self-destruction and save the planet, will take place on the Lost Island at the end of series 6.
The Lost Testament pieces together elements of ‘Lost’ to support the theory.
THE USURPERS, THE PROPHECY, THE CHANGING OF JACOB
In Jacob’s one hundred and fiftieth year, the Spirit again appeared to him. “The time of Regeneration approaches, but I warn you that scientists from the outside world are plotting a course to the island. They will build great caverns in the ground, to study the artefacts, and wish to advance the sciences to help humankind. They call themselves Dharma, and their benefactor, Alvar Hanso, is a descendant of the Captain of the Black Rock. He means well, unlike his ancestor, who would have plundered the island.”
“I also speak to you now, Jacob, of your brother. For his vision has forewarned him that the island will not suffer his presence. But he has become powerful in the outer world and knows the island has been found. So he seeks to usurp Alvar Hanso as the leader of Dharma. Thus the Dharma scientists will unknowingly work for Charles, and he, along with others of evil nature, shall profit from the inventions of Dharma."
"And they shall make in vials a plague to be released upon the earth. Also shall they make an antidote, but this they shall keep unto themselves, saving only those who serve them, or suit their purpose. And your brother shall rule the island from afar. We shall call them Usurpers, those who seek to hold the world to ransom.”
Jacob felt betrayed. Although his visions foretold of human suffering at the time of Regeneration, he had not foreseen his brother as the cause. “Why do you allow this, surely there is a better…”
“The Regeneration will still take place, Jacob, and the descendants of the island will rule the Earth as prophesised. The Chosen will not die of the plague, for the island protects them.”
“And what of the innocent in the outer world, people who have led good lives?” The anger flowed out of Jacob, for he had endured the leadership of the Chosen so that humans would experience the new beginning. And now he feared the Spirit’s answer. The reply from the black smoke was not without hesitation or remorse, but the words were hammer blows nonetheless.
“The antidote will save some humans…for a time.”
Jacob wept, for he had believed that most humans would survive the Regeneration. They would surely have been willing to serve descendants of the Chosen, after the miracles of the island became known. But the Spirit had prevented Jacob’s visions from revealing the whole truth. Inside Jacob a well of bitterness began to seep through the cracked wall of his will power. He had driven the Chosen on with his belief and determination, but the true price of their destiny was kept from them. They trusted him absolutely, but if they learned the truth, that trust would be shattered, and they would resist the Regeneration.
“I can carry the burden no further” said Jacob “I will not jeopardize the new beginning, but I will not lead by deception. Is there no-one else?” The black smoke roared in anger, and all around trees were crushed into their roots by an invisible pounding. For some reason Jacob thought of the island’s giant broken statue. The Spirit calmed, but the flickering white flashes told him that judgement was imminent.
“You have served well, Jacob, but before you are released from the burden, there are some final tasks. Send Alpert to the outer world to find a boy called John Locke. He will endure much in his life, and Abaddon, who serves your brother, will try to influence him. When John is ready, he will find the Island, and will learn to carry the burden. Before this, a child of Dharma, called Benjamin will seek the Chosen in the forest, and must be protected. For he will teach the Chosen the ways of Dharma, and the Chosen will teach him the ways of the island. You must prepare him to lead your people until John is ready.”
Then the Spirit instructed Jacob to tell Alpert and the Chosen only of Dharma, John and Benjamin. He was to say nothing of the plague or the Usurpers. Jacob did that which was asked of him, but upon returning to the forest he felt weary and lay down. After a dreamless sleep he awoke in a cabin and heard the voice of the Spirit. “The Creator rewards your loyal service, Jacob, by allowing your soul to remain on the island until the work of the Chosen is complete. After this you may rest. Until then, you may speak only to those mortals such as the Creator permits. But you may appear as an apparition to John, and speak freely.”
Thus Jacob passed from mortal life to that of a soul bound to the island.
