Many people have mentioned the plot hole about how Danielle survived the purge. Here's a simple explanation. First, let's take a look at what we know:
~Ben killed his father in the DHARMA van
~Hostiles killed people at the Barracks
~People were still in the Swan Station until 2004
~Assuming her story is accurate, Danielle "survived" the purge.
Here is how it could all work out:
1. If the gas from the Tempest were to kill everyone on the Island, then why would Ben kill his father personally? Therefore, the Tempest did not emit gas to EVERY part of the Island. Maybe it can emit gas to particular parts of the Island, depending on what the person desires.
2. Ben was part of DHARMA. He could have known the day when the most people would be at the Barracks. The Hostiles set the gas off at the Barracks, killing off most of DHARMA. Following that, the Hostiles killed off the remaining DHARMA (with the exception of the Swan Station inhabitants) at each particular station.
3. The Hostiles (now including Ben) knew that the Swan Station was important. In addition, they knew that the people in the Swan were not to leave the station until their replacements came. Therefore, the people in the Swan Station were not a threat to the Hostiles, so they were left alone.
4. Now we have the question of why Danielle wasn't killed in the purge. It would have been easy for a Hostile to take a canister of gas and kill her. A clue to why this might be is found in "Cabin Fever". In this episode, Ben tells Hurley that it wasn't his decision to kill DHARMA. My interpretation is that Jacob told him to purge DHARMA. How does this play into Danielle surviving? Well, when telling Ben to purge DHARMA, he may have said to keep Danielle alive, for whatever reason.
