This theory came to me just a few minutes ago as i rewatched episode 4.11. The scenes where we can clearly recognise Richard Albert, the infamous time traveller of the show. Now to me this character is the key to this whole thing. He is the only one who is totally free to do as he pleases, to revisit the past and then continue his life knowing things that others do not, simply by just revisiting a past timeline.
Now, i also remember that Daniel said to Desmond with absolute confidence the following : "You can't change the future". This a crucial line. It also leaves the open window of the following : You cannot change a future, but what about a future of a different timeline?
Then it came to me that Richard was right to leave frustrated from young John's house afer he tested him with all the stuff john has in his future. As i understand this, Richard wants to find a timeline where John Locke simply never arrives on the island. then he can simply set that particular timeline as the "dominant one", the one timeline that actually happens. When Locke chose the knife, Richard knew that this Locke was one of the infinite number of Locke's who arrive on the island.
John's arrival on the island was simply catastrophic. Despite his best efforts' his pride, his over-confidence and lust for the fulfillment of his so-called destiny, he managed to kill most of the Losties and finally destroy almost every single way of getting them out of it.
Richard is one of the "Ones that Were", an original inhabitant of the island and as such, he is striving to protect it, even more than Ben. He wants to create a proper past where the island is never discovered, a past where none of all this has ever happened. But he fails again and again and again. Hope he does something though, be4 locke ruins everything! I mean come on! Look where he ends up! From a mysterious crippled 50 year-old to an amazing hunter, leader of the others, murderer and then dead guy in a coffin. Not much of a life story.
