Hello all, before we start I’d just like to say that this is a theory but I don’t believe it 100% right at all, I hope you can take parts from this and add to your own ideas. I just want to try and open up some doors and maybe offer something a little different.
Ok, so I gather a lot of people have been researching Jacob since the producers were asked the relevance of his name, and replied “names are not assigned without a reason”, and although Jacob crops up in different names of iconic people throughout history, the most fitting is the biblical Jacob.
Being brought up in a Jewish family I am very familiar with the story, as I suppose all us lost addicts are also by now. So I’ll give you a quick basic outline if you are not.
The name Jacob is a derived from the Hebrew word YA’AQOV
AQOV means literally “he who grasps the heel” which is a saying that means “ to cheat”
Jacob was a twin, he was born holding on to his brothers heel
His brother Esau was his Father’s favourite (Isaac)
And Jacob his mothers favourite (Rebekah)
Esau was heir to the family name
God told rebekah that Jacob was to be heir
Jacob eventually cheated his brother out of his birthright by offering him food
Esau was going to die of starvation and accepted the deal figuring if he didn’t he’d die
Jacob also tricked Abraham into blessing him before he died
Jacob is depicted as being a clever man who dwelled in tents but the true translation suggests that he was a “ordinary man and a striver and a sinner” . He was chosen by God despite himself and his lack of virtue and was converted, Jacob was not a particularly good person. He is also known as the trickster, using the phrase “holds the heel” is used to represent a cheat, meaning that Jacob was trying to steal his brothers birth right at birth by trying to pull him back by his heel. Jacob is described as undeserving and at times evens lost faith in god, later on in life he even killed an angel. But despite all this God loved Jacob.
Jacob and Esau are also described as “two nations in the womb”, after Jacob had stolen Esau’s birth right,
Jacob fled to Canaan and Esau went to Edom, and Esau held a grudge and tried to get Jacob murdered. Eventually Edom fell, and Jacob and had 12 children by 4 different woman, the most recognizable of these are Dan and Benjamin. Eventually Jacob died and his children formed 12 tribes that made up Israel. Jacob was blessed as being called Israel by God, the term Israel literally translates as “Struggles with God” as Jacob did throughout his life.
So by now you must be thinking how does this relate to the Mystical presence we know as “Him”. Well
This is where it gets a little crazy, I believe Jacob’s real name is not Jacob, I believe he is named Jacob because he tricked someone out of their right to the Island. I believe this person is Charles Widmore I caught on to this idea while reaching some season 4 episodes. Here are some interesting quotes
“the island is mine Benjamin, It always was and it will be again”

“As you already know, we are not the only ones who left the island”

And lastly the major line that supports this theory
“I know who you are boy, what you are, and I know that everything you have, you took from me”

I believe Widmore discovered the island, I have always had a feeling that Widmore was on the Black Rock so far the idea is pheasible. The first reason is his knowledge and apparent love of boats (Kahana, solo race around the world, Black Rock Ledger) and his fondness of Admiral MacCutcheon. We see one side of him as a ruthless business man, a very powerful and very rich man. But we also see a raw side to him. In “Flashes before your eyes” he appears that rich, smartly dressed, cleanly shaven powerful man. But in “the shape of things to come” he is a unshaved, and his mannerism is completely different, he also speaks in a manner that could be described as pirate speak, his English accent is more old English and he speaks in a edgy crooked way as supposed to his calm and in control way he speaks to Desmond . We have gathered that he has been to the island at some point for numerous reasons, Sun’s quote in “there’s no place like home” and because he has kno! wledge of the Black Rock by purchasing the Ledger in “the Constant”.
So when did he arrive? And when and why did he leave? …….I believe he arrived on the black rock with his twin, although Canon I think Bad Twin the novel by Gary Troup was a general hint, it is about the Widmore family and is centered around a pair of Widmore twins. I believe Widmore was twins with Jacob and somehow Jacob stole Widmore‘s right to the island. I believe some of the crew joined “the hostiles” . I think Jacob and Widmore joined “the hostiles” , I think Widmore was deemed as special and became their leader. I believe Widmore also saw this as a business investment, and at some point left the island but continued to be the leader, ruling the island from the mainland.
Having been in years of contact previously with Magnus Hanso from the Black Rock Widmore got in contact with his son Alvar. Widmore funded his project the Dharma Initiative, and gave him co-ordinates to the island to start work. Meanwhile on the island Jacob was secretly plotting against Widmore, trying to steal his birth right. The Dharma Initiative were underway on the island and Widmore was starting to learn what the island was and how it works, but I believe he became greedy and tried to use Jacob in an experiment which went horribly wrong and unstuck Jacob from his conscious timeline. I believe this to be “the incident”.
Jacob somehow became a part of the island, and I believe undeservedly so, I believe he led the hostiles and arranged the purge to rid the island of Widmore and his birth right. Shortly after this Jacob moved the island leaving Widmore with no idea where the island had gone. Jacob had become the leader of a new group and appointed the betrayer of the Dharma Initiative Ben as leader. When Jacob became incorporeal I believe that he was able to communicate with Ben, Richard had told “the Hostiles” that he had met a young Ben in he forest who had seen a vision of his dead mother and wanted to join them. Jacob plotted with Ben and made him orchestrate the purge.
Widmore was becoming increasingly agitated and slowly focused his anger on Ben for betraying him. And is disgusted that his own employee betrayed him and takes orders from the man who cheated him out of his birth right. I believe Widmore did arrange for Alex to be killed and for the island to be torched, he became impatient and wanted to betray Ben by disobeying the “Rules”. I think Widmore hired Abaddon to find the island.

Abbadon claims to have found a miracle in the Australian outback that changed his life, we know Australia has special geographical qualities from when Rose and Bernard went to the outback to find Isaac of Uluru who claimed to be able to heal Rose’s cancer. So I gather that Abaddon found a connection to the Island, like locke he went on a walkabout to find himself on a spiritual journey and the Island found him. I believe that Abbadon has been working for the Island and helping to get people there that should be. We see him talk to Naomi telling her that specific people need to go there even though under qualified so to speak.
I believe Abaddon is neither good nor bad, I think he is kind of the recruiter for the island I believe the island tells him what it wants and he provides no questions asked. I do not know if he completely knew the extent of what Widmore was doing with the Kahana but he used the opportunity to get the science team to the Island.
And lastly the other comment that got me on the trail of thought is this comment from widmore
“when did you start sleeping with a bottle of scotch by the bed” - Ben
“when the nightmares started” - Widmore (the shape of things to come)
I believe Widmore is receiving Visions from the Island, I believe widmore is somehow aware of the bad things that are happening to the Island , and may just be trying to save it. But from what we have of seen of Widmore, it really is just clutching air, we haven’t yet seen enough to rule out Widmore as the Bad Twin.
