Hi again all!
First of all thanks for the 3 star rating fot my previous (and first) theory. Now i know that any predictions i made in that theory were not backed by any serious arguements, but, as i said, i've watched a lot of LOST.
So, after a lot of re-thinking i decided to analyse a bit all the death events on the island, trying eventually to show you how each character took his own special path towards his/her death.
But forst of all some ground rules should be established. Since i have read many (ah..many ,many!) books about the universal rules that "guide" matter and time to "destined"- better say, pre-selected locations, i can tell you that the producers of the show have done their homework before entering the vast maze of mystery they created around their show.
RULE 1
The universe is based on chaos: You can die at any possible time and place and what can keep you alive is the fact that the odds are in your favor most of the times. In more simple words: accidents can happen everywhere but people are generally carefull to avoid them. Death is behind every corner especially in the Losties case.
Now, in the show that rule is not applied since many major characters (Kate, Sawyer, Jack, Hurley, Sayid and more) have been in mortal danger too many times. I would like here to post 3 major examples: a)Sawyer evading a sum of about 100 rounds of automatic ammunition when the Barracks was invaded by Keamy and after a few secconds b) Claire gettting rescued by Sawyer with nothing but a light-headed concussion after the house she temporarely lived in blew up with her inside. c)Jack having tons of boulders falling on him in the caves and still live in one piece
More examples exist and i will bring a last one: Michael commiting suicide 2 times and failing (seccond time being warned by Tom that the island wont let him die)- "Meet Kevin Johnson" episode.
In general people on this island die for a reason. Death is more "selective" on the isalnd. I believe that those who do survive have more "work to do", and i believe that this work is the fact that they are on this island to improve their lifes.
If you have noticed in all the shows's flashbacks, all the characters seem to have what i would call a not-well-led life. Most of them were so terribly haunted by their mistakes and special situations that are actually happy to be on the isalnd. (Locke and Rose where healed from past injuries-illnesses, Eko being a drug dealer, Charlie being a drug addict where also given peace and cure for their situations).
So here they are all now, trying to survive in a hostile enviroment, being "tested" as Locke says by the island, making choices they would noramlly reject in their lifes back in the mainland. Examples are various: Jin decided to patch things up for good with his wife, leaving back his old aggressive, stubborn self, Sawyer learned to care for other people, Kate begun to trust people, Hurley got rid of his compulsory need for food even after Libby's death.
These are the good examples. People that still live because they have decided to change their lifes for good, or at least they try (even unconciensly) hard to do so. The island (which i believe it is some sort of universe of itself, with its own "rules" as Ben said when his daughter was killd in cold blood by Keamy).
A bad example would be Locke. Being so special for the island, he was given nummerous chances to change his life but (as JamesB very well pointed out in his awesome theory) he was too busy and narrow minded to see that this place had something more of a past for him, like it does for all of the survivors. jaccob tried to summon him many times but Lockes narrow point of view messed that up for a long time. Locke believed that it was his destiny to find and live in the island , to forget his terrible and disturbed life in the mainland, and finally be with the people that understood him (Others). He pushed the button and did many other bad choices. He is special to the isalnd though because he underands it better than all the other passengers of 815.
Yet, John is found in a coffin in the finalle of season 4. Why? Because (as i believe) the island simply gives people a chancee to be better and if one does not take advantage of that chance, he island simply kills him. Good people (and i mean good deep down) are given many chances to change and that is clear as the O6 left (thus commiting a terrible mistake as far as the island is concerned) and still managed to live. The island spared them because they chose to lie about its location. Michael and Walt were also spared because of that. They all continued to lead ruined lifes but remain alive notheless. So once they are back they might as well do somehting right and fix the bad things that happened. In the island everybody gets a new life to lead and fix, a gift that the O6 rejected when they left.
Locke died because he completely forgot (or never even realised) why he was actually on the island. He came to love the island so much that he didnt try to improve his life,he was distracted, hopelsessly tried to get into a hatch with no door because he believed deep inside that he was special and suppossed to do so ,and made many mistakes in all the seasons, sacrifising people (Boone, Eko) in order to fullfill his destiny.
Totally selfish behaviour if you ask me, thinking that he was special because he walked. That same thing happened to Rose. Everybody where "healed" and became "0special" when they crashed on the island, not just Locke. He didnt try to change his life at all and that eventually killed him. The island spared him that long a time because he loved it and chose to protect it, destroying all the possible ways that could unravell its location (destroyed Sayid's radio eccuipement season 1, blew up the submmarine in season 3, killed Naomi in saeson 4). Jaccob s! aw all this and that's why he wanted John to do him a favor: make Ben (who as i believe Jaccob-island-universe hates because he is too selfish) go away and at the same time save the island from being attacked by Widmore. Ben was also spared that long by the isalnd because he also protected it by lying to all his people about the looking glass. Another reason the isalnd spared Locke is that he is a good person of course. But he died. He died doing the one thing he was forced to do, the thing that cost his life: he left the isalnd, determined in his narrow point of view that he was still destined to do so and by doing that, he did convnine Jack to return but the island had enough of him. It killed Locke so he would learn his lesson. Locke simply never realised that he was not on the island to find its secrets (that puts him in our shoes actually, the fans- he is like a lost fan who wants to know all about the island like we all do but he doesnt learn the real lesson, that a person must lead his life as best as he/ she can. I am 100% con! vinvced (since the show has been so crazy since even season 1) that we all watch this show not just for fun but to learn the value of life like the characters must also. All the other mysteries are inferior, small pieces of distraction from our and the Lost cast's real purpose: to find why they are there. So far no character (besides Ben and Alpert i believe) has understood that. Nor the fanbase of the show, us. We struggle so much to find out what is really going on there that we and the characters forget ourselves, our lifes in the process, just to know things that sometimes are best to be kept secrets. I personally think that all our questions will be finally answered but they will not fullfill us before we learn the undergoing message of the show: Value and Love your life.
That's all about Locke. He is the top bad example of a not good life fighter. He didnt cahnge his life one bit. Jack is far better. He became a better person every day on the island and when he made a mistake he always tried to fix it. He obeyed the island rules more than Locke if you ask me. Locke survived and explored on the island. Jack lived and learned on the island. Even though Jack is more of a threat to the island (than Locke who wants to protect it) because he could have easily revealed its location to the public, he found his real purpose in life: to fix it as he always does: in episode "A tale of two cities" we all find out that Jack knows how to fix things.
More "bad" examples are Ana Lucia who tried again to kill for revenge Ben when he first tried to kill her, Charlie, because even though he did a brave thing going down the Looking glass, giving up drugs, taking care of Claire, the isalnd could not afford to be discovered so it decided that he had to go, Shannon who never got over her brother in all the ways you can possibly think, Libby for being a sane figure to Hurley while she actually was crazy herself, Boone because he had issues with his sister he could not surpass, Eko for not coming to terms with the fact that he had to change his past life full of crime, e.t.c.
As far as the whole kidnapping children is concerned, well, i believe that children are saints in human form. Innocent in every possible way, children can make many mistakes the island can kill for, so the Others kidnapp them and "give them a better life than the 815 survivors do" (i dont remember the episode this phrase is said but its form Carle- Alex's boyfriend, somewhere around episodes 17-19 season 3). Ohters kep the children in captivity so they wont die doing something foolish. Kids are like white papers they have no past life to fix, so their potential on the island is unmatchable and so serious can be their mistakes. The others simply teach the children how not to make mistakes so their future lifes can be well-led.
In the end the islands final test is the following question: Can you stand this situation of struggling for your life everyday, or will you yield?
Thats all for now...wew! big theory! and to think i only explained universe rule No.1 lol! Be back with the 2nd part of that analysis-theory once i organise my thoughts again! Thanks for reading me! Hold on till January first guyes! LOST 4 EVER!!
