Having now all this experience behind (by watching repeatedly the 4 released seasons of lost) i have come to seriously think that the island itself is an old habitat of a mysterious civilization. So to me the title "lost" has a double meaning: the lost passengers of oceanic 815 and the lost civilization of what i believe is to be Atlantis.
The four-toed statue that the Korean couple and Sayid discovered while circling the island leads to the following conclusion: People have lived on that island for far too long before the 815 crash, before Benjamin, before even the Others.
As far as the Others are concerned, i believe (from things Benjamin has said that most of them have been transfered to the island rather that been born there)that the lost civilization has either been extinct form natural causes or tribal feuds. If this is not the case we shall see them in the following seasons.
At the end of season 4 Benjamin moved the island through space and time by using an ancient mechanism, far deep into the island's core. Such an ancient machinery (that complicated and yet so easy to use) indicates that the people who created it (of course it's not the others but rather the leftovers of that civilization)had at their possession vast resources of: manpower, advanced technology and the knowledge to exploit both.
This is the exact profile of the Atlantean civilization, which (according to Plato) sunk deep under the seas surface, never to return to existence. Atlanteans possessed incredible technology but they eventually angered the Gods by rejecting them, believing that their power was greater than theirs. The Gods cursed Atlantis and made it sink.
The island that now the passengers of 815 struggle to survive believe it or not fits the profile. Since the island can move through space and time it could have been saved by its terrible fate by simply teleporting. Those few others (meaning Richard) possess the profound ability of time and space traveling because every theory (from immortality to alien existence on the island fails when we see Richard present at Locke's day whe his mother would hold him for the first time).
I am pretty sure that Richard (including Jacob) is the last survivor of the ancient civilization that once lived in that island.
Now to where is this all pointing to? I am 90% sure that the island has not only moved in space but in time also.
SPACE: The polar bears that live on the island seem to have adapted well into this strange for them environment meaning that the island may have been once upon a time near the north pole.
TIME: There is no hard evidence on time traveling of the island except little pieces of information gathered by the producers. If such a thing is true then we may see older versions of Sayer and the others that were left behind once the Oceanic 6 return to the island. Of course this theory is not entirely acceptable since Locke did not seem older when he visited Kate, Jack and Hugo, judging by the last seconds of season 4 and he was on the island when it moved. So i am prepared for everything. One thing is for sure that ancient civilization does exist on the island and the following season will be the most definitive one for answers.
