"I never entered the numbers, I never pressed the button." - Ben
"Here is the boat Michael, follow the bearing of 305." -Ben
"You have to stick to the bearing of 325." - Daniel Faraday
The finale answered one of my biggest question: Why the hell did Ben try to convince Locke not to push the button in the hatch? Ever asked the same thing? Well, let us travel back to the 90s shortly after the purge. In Live Together, Die Alone, we saw the the others never even took the time to dispose of the astoundingly large pile of marble notebooks from the Pearl Station. So when I watched the finale and Ben blew up the chamber in the Orchid Station I asked myself: If they didn't take the time to clean up the notebooks, why would they take the time to rebuild the the chamber if they previously used the wheel to move the island? It is clear the Others have allowed the Dharma stations to become dilapidated ruins, just look at the outside of the Orchid, so if the Others turned the wheel after the purge, why would they rebuild the chamber for "silly experiments?"
Because there is more than one way to move the island of course.
"We're gonna find out what happens when that button doesn't get pushed." - Locke
So why would Ben want Locke to stop pushing the button in the hatch? Because not pushing the button, or activating the failsafe, moves the island. Don't believe me? Look no further than Live Together, Die alone. Ben gives Michael the bearing of 305 to follow. The button "doesn't get pushed" and Desmond turns the failsafe. The sky turns purple, as it did when Ben moved the island, and the island is consumed in momentary chaos. Ben wanted the island moved, but did not want to turn that dreaded wheel as he was destined ( "I hope you're happy now Jacob." would indicate this), though the universe "has a way of course correcting." ( He did not want to move the island via the Swan because he did not wish to risk his life in doing so."
So now we return to season 4. The bearing is now 325, indicating the island was indeed moved when Desmond turned the failsafe.
