So, I had a thought today.
And, since I like short theories, here it comes:
Locke doesn't really understand the importance of the island. It IS a sacred place, guarded by special people, "The Others", who make sure it keeps clean from evil people and evil vibes. He is confused because he isn't, even if it looks like it, the one to rule the island.
Now, about Dharma, The Others, guardians of the island, lived happy until the black rock crashed. Then, Granpa Hanso returned to society, using the coordenades that one of the others, that he had befriended, gave him. That person told Hanso about the properties of the island, and he decided to form the DI so those properties were known by everyone. Of course, as a course correcting mechanism, the purge ocurred, and they were killed. Then, Ben, as a special one, stayed on the original group as a guardian of the island.
The Losties crashed on the island, putting in danger the secret location of it. And it happened again, the freighties found it out, and course correcting kicked in.
So, my theory is that true power of the island and this info will be known in season 5.
