"Because moving the island is both risky and unpredictable."
My biggest question following the finale is what are these "dark times" that Locke speaks of. My first instinct was to believe it was just a trick by Locke and Ben to get the O6 back to the island but now I'm certain these "dark times" are genuine and a result of moving the island.
Go back to the days after the purge. Singe Dharma knew the location of the island it seems fairly safe to assume the island was moved following the purge or else Widmore wouldn't have trouble finding it. Several problems followed: pregnant women were dying, the volcano was disrupted, Jacob became unstuck in time and communication with him was lost, and communication and contact with the outside world had to be virtually severed. The island does not like to be moved and responds to said moving with violence and hostility.
“I hope you’re happy now Jacob.”
It was Ben’s job to move the island in the past. This would then allow Locke to succeed him as “leader.” But Ben was unwilling to bear this burden and used the polar bears to do it.(Hence, the polar bear ending up in Tunisia)
Conclusion: Ben’s comments indicate that moving the island can cause problems and moving the island is responsible for the pregnancy problem and the “dark times” that Jack speaks of. Ben’s statement to Jacob, and final on-island words “I hope you’re happy now Jacob.” gives the impression that it was Jacob’s wish that Ben move the island after the purge.
