ORCHID AND THE WARP BUBBLE:
The Orchid video reveals that the Island produces a natural Casimir effect. The Casimir effect is the result of the Casimir experiment where two non-charged metal plated spaced close together. Scientist discovered that energy was produced in the small space or vacuum between the plates. This energy is what scientist call “Vacuum Energy” or “Zero point energy” or “Dark Matter”. This energy is also what scientist argue is required to travel at speeds faster than light. Under the General Theory of Relativity, travel at speeds faster than light will produce time travel. However, many scientists believe such time travel is impossible for people because it would take infinite energy (Zero point energy) for matter to travel at speeds faster than light.
However, there is a theory that seems to solve this infinite energy requirement problem. This theory states that a finite or quantum amount of zero point energy can be used to create a warp bubble around objects or matter. The bubble contracts space-time as it moves forward and expands space-time behind the bubble as the bubble is sucked forward at speeds faster than light. Therefore, making it possible for matter (inside the bubble traveling at speeds faster than light) to travel at speeds faster than light without requiring infinite energy. This theory is called the Alberive Dive or Warp Bubble theory.
I doubt the Island naturally produces Dark Matter since the only source of dark matter naturally occurring in the Universe is thought to in Black Holes. Instead, I believe DARMA is unaware that someone created a large Casimir experiment on the Island where 2 giant metal plates were place under the Island that now produces Zero Point Energy or dark matter. This leads to the next question. Why? One clue is some characters do not seem to age, others have precognition, while others seem to travel backwards and forward in time.
ORIGIN OF THE CASIMIR EFFECT:
I think whoever created the Casimir effect did so for purposes of traveling in time. This leads to two possibilities.
POSSIBILITY (1): Original Natives created the Casimir effect in the distant future for the purpose of traveling into the past. The appearance of the 4 toed Statue suggests that the Island is from the future where mankind through evolution has only 4 toes.
POSSIBILITY (2): Original Natives created the Casimir effect deep in the past and traveled into the future. However, the creators of Lost originally wanted a 6 toed statue which raises supports this possibility if the creators theorized that mankind originally had 6 toes.
The problem with (1) is that most theories of time travel suggest that you may only travel into the past at the point in time when the time machine was first created. The creators may get around this by suggesting the possibility that the time machine itself (Island) is placed in the warp bubble and sent into the past where it would exist in the past.
The problem with (1) and (2) is traveling into the future or past would pose problems under the Theory of Causality. This theory simply states that for every cause there is an effect or “event”.
PROBLEM A: Can you observe the effect before the cause; and if so can you alter the cause so there is no effect? Many scientists theorize that you can observe the effect, but you cannot alter the cause because there are infinite causes for any one effect. This explains why Desmond could not save Charlie. The effect or event was his death. Desmond altered the cause but the effect was the same. PROBLEM B: If you travel into the future (leave your timeline at Point A and land in the future at Point C what is the effect on cause and effect on events that were supposed to have occurred at Point B? This problem would be much more complicated considering the possibility that each person’s cause and effect (or Destiny) leads to another person’s cause and effect in a given set of events. So if events did not occur at Point B that were a part of another person’s destiny (cause and effect), by leaving Point A to Point C, it would not only alter one’s own destiny but the destin! y of others.
Since the statute has four toes I’ll assume the creators are going with possibility (1). I think the Original natives in the future determined that humanity was about to be destroyed. Since, it is believed that there is no solution to the Valenzetti Equation, the Original natives constructed the Casimir effect under the island to produce dark matter for the purpose of creating Zero point energy required to form a warp bubble that would allow the island and its people to travel into the past to avoid some event that led to the destruction of humanity.
This would lead the Original Natives and now the Losties to run into two independent problems. 1) GRAVITATIONAL TIME-DILATION (GTD): Because Zero Point energy or dark matter is a force it must also have mass. Black holes suck up everything around it because this dark matter has great mass, which produces an enormous gravitational field that pulls everything around it into the event horizon. Thus, if the Island creates dark mass it also creates a gravitational field. This explains why when the Island isn’t moving in time using the Warp bubble, time is slower on the Island. Recently, Einstein’s theory of gravitational time-dilation has been proven in experiments aboard the space shuttle. The theory states that gravity is a force that slows the passage of time from a certain vantage point. In the experiment, the atomical clock aboard the space shuttle ticked faster than the atomical clock on the ground because it moved further away from Earth’s gravitational field. Thus,! the clock on Earth ticked slower from the perspective of those on the shuttle. Therefore, time on the Island, passes at a slower rate as a byproduct of producing dark matter via the Casimir effect which creates a field of gravity that is greater than that of Earth’s gravitational field.
This explains the comment that time flies on the Island. It does but only from the perspective of those not on the island within its gravitational field. This also is one part of the reason for Richard’s age. He is aging at a slower rate due to GTD. This also explains part of the reason for children not being born on the Island. From the perspective of those off the island, the child actually develops at a slower rate. From the perspective of those on the island, the child is developing at the normal rate. However, the Lost creators suggest the woman’s womb develops at the same rate of time off the island, which is faster. This would mean though the womb develops faster than the Child until a point in which both die premature child birth. However, causality A & B may also prevent the child from being born.
2) CAUSALITY VIOLATIONS: Traveling into the past or future would result in the causality problems (A)(B).
CHILD BIRTH: The problem here is whether the child can be born (effect) before it has been conceived (cause). This would occur in two ways.
1) The child is conceived in the future or present but is born in the past. This is possible if the child is conceived on the island in the present or future but is born in the past because a) the island has warped into the past or GTD slows time on the island to such a degree that the child is born in the past before conception. Thus, causality would not permit the child to come into existence before the cause of its existence.
2) The child is conceived in the present but born in the future. The Gestation period is 9 months at the normal rate of time off the Island. The child is conceived (cause) at Point A and the birth (effect) is supposed to occur at Point B, 9 months later. If the child is born at Point C, this presents problems with Causality problem B. Because the child does not come into existence when he/she should have, the destiny of the child affects the destiny of others connected to him/her. Thus, Causality may prevent this from occurring by preventing the Child from being born at Point C.
ARRON: He’s birth is either a rare occurrence or the result of course correction. I think he was able to be born because the following happened. He was conceived in 2003 and should have been born in 2004 when the plane crashed. However, at the time of the crash, the island is in the year of 2005. GTD normally would prevent his birth but does not because Claire, unlike other women, landed on the Island in the future. When Desmond failed to turn the key, he moved the island forward in time to 2005. But, from that point on the island again moving backward in time from 2005 due to GTD. As a result and by coincidence, as Claire’s womb developed at the accelerated rate, the Island was moving backward in time towards Point B when Arron should have been born. Thus, Arron was born because the plane crashed at the exact point in time where neither GTD nor Causality would prevent his birth. Was this destined to happen or influenced by the Original Natives? The answer requires an ! answer to the questions below regarding the Giant Time Loop.
GHOSTS AND THE WHISPERS: The same problem arises here. But instead of the problem with coming into existence at Point C instead of Point B, the ghosts are people whose existence ends prematurely. In short, if you were supposed to die at Point C but die at Point B, than Causality Problem B occurs if your death is an event that affects the destiny of others. This is a kind of Grandfather paradox, which states that you can’t travel into the past to kill you grandfather before your father is born. Something will always prevent it from happening because if it did happen you would not have been able to travel into the past to begin with. Therefore, these ghosts are people who died before they were meant to. Thus, these ghosts exist only to influence those whose destiny was altered by their premature death so as to prevent the grandfather paradox. This suggests that cause and effect may be altered but never changed.
This also presents an explanation under Possibility (1). If the Original Natives traveled from the distant future into the past and died, they would become ghosts because they must exist in the future to be able to build the Casimir effect to travel into the past. I think this explains the whispers. While some are those that died that were not Original natives, some are Original natives seeking to influence destiny of others so that humanity will be destroyed in the future making it possible for the events to occur that lead them to escape into the past.
GIANT TIME LOOP
This also means that from the standpoint of the Original Natives, they are in a giant time loop. They exist in the future and then travel to the past and influence destiny of those in the past to preserve the timeline so that they exist in the future, humanity will be destroyed, and they escape using dark matter produced by the Casimir effect. This raises two important questions.
A: Was it their destiny to leave the future to travel into the past?
If so, everything we see is as it was meant to be including their attempts to alter their destiny and the side effects that affected them and everyone else in the history of mankind. Thus, the giant time loop is meant to happen. Interesting because if true no one would ever know.
B: Were these Original Natives changing their own destiny creating Causality violations in the past? This is probably were the creators are going. The Original Natives by changing their own destiny, have changed the destiny of others causing causality violations in each time loop that must be corrected to preserve their own timeline and thus prevent such a course corrections that would break the time loop. So the Black Rock, Darma, and the Losties may have all have a role in the Original Native’s Destiny, but from the Original Native’s perspective the causes and effects of the Black Rock, Darma, and the Losties change in each time loop. This explains some of the whispers that seem to know what is about to happen or become unsettled when something does not happen as it has before.
THE FINAL EPISODE
The creators may use the answer to question A. Everything we see is as it was meant to be including the Original Native’s attempts to alter their destiny and the side effects that affected them and everyone else in the history of mankind, including the Losties. Thus, the theme of show is that the Destiny can be altered from a larger perspective but can not be prevented because even altering destiny is part of destiny itself.
The creators may use answer the question B. The Original Natives by changing their own destiny, have changed the destiny of others causing causality violations in each time loop that must be corrected to preserve their own timeline and thus prevent such a course corrections that would break the time loop. One of the characters on the show will cause the time loop to be broken. This would leave us with the possibility that nothing we’ve seen has occurred because the Island would not have been able to travel in to past leading to events we’ve all watched on the show. Thus, one of the characters on the show by proxy is part of course correction that prevents the Original Natives from putting themselves and humanity in a giant time loop. Thus, the theme of the show is the same. Destiny can be altered from a larger perspective but can not be prevented because even altering destiny is part of destiny itself.
In conclusion, I think the creators are attempting to advocate that everything on the show is possible under the Grand Unification Theory.
