I have been trying to piece together the genealogy of Lost and I believe I have made some sense of it. I am certain that genealogy matters. We just have too much detail for it not too. For example, we know Charlie’s mother and father’s names and his mother’s grand father (Dexter Stratton). I know that a lot of people watching the show would have a hard time naming even one of their own great grand parents.
In addition to genealogy, we know that the Black Rock and time travel are important and recurring themes. I make no assertion that what I am presenting is absolute and I know it has unexplained holes, but I am beginning to believe that most if not all of the main characters are related to crew members of the Black Rock and that there may be rivalries between the family trees over control of the island.
As we know the Black Rock was a British ship that was lost at seas in the mid-1800s. I have long noted that many of the character surnames have origins in the British Isles, so I did a little research and can up with the following surname origins:
English Surnames
1. James “Sawyer” Ford
2. Kate Austen/ Father Wayne Janssen (Janssen is English)
3. Claire Littleton
4. Charlie Pace
5. Michael Dawson
6. Daniel Faraday
7. Dr. Juliet Burke (née Carlson) – (Carlson is English and Burke is Irish)
8. Sam Austen
9. Charles Widmore
10. Bernard Nadler
11. Kelvin Joe Inman
12. Seth Norris
Scottish Surnames
1. John Locke
2. Richard Alpert
3. Desmond Hume
4. Shannon Rutherford
5. Boone Carlyle
6. Leslie Arzt (Scottish first name and Jewish last name)
7. Rose Henderson Nadler (Henderson is Scottish)
8. Admiral Anderson MacCutcheon
Possibly English or Scottish Surnames
1. Jack Shephard
2. Christian Shephard
3. Anthony Copper
Welsh Surnames
1. Walter Lloyd (Mother’s name Lloyd is Welsh)
2. Brian Porter (Walt’s step father)
3. Cassidy Phillips (Sawyer’s Baby Momma)
4. Charlotte Staples Lewis
Too many characters have surnames that are easily understood to be English, Scottish and Welsh to be coincidence. It is possible that 3 members of the Black Rock (1 English, 1 Scottish & 1 Welsh) survived the wreck and either through escape from the island or time travel now have extended families containing the various people listed above. There may also be an African slave that survived and has a family, but note that all of the characters of African decent other than Mr. Eko have Scottish or English surnames.
Several Characters have surnames that do not match a Scottish, English or Welsh surname:
1. Hugo “Hurley” Reyes
2. Ana Lucia Cortez (Father unknown)
3. Libby
4. Ben Linus (???)
5. Jin-Soo Kwon (Mother a prostitute/real father unknown)
6. Sun Kwon (Was supposed to ditch Jin right before boarding the flight)
7. Mr. Eko
8. Sayid
9. Frank Lapidus
10. Miles Straume
Of these, note that Mr. Eko and Sayid are from Nigeria and Iraq respectively. These were both part of the English Empire at points after the mid-1800s and it is conceivable that they could have a forefather that was British military or a diplomat. Libby is presumably of Anglo origin, but we don’t have a last name for her. Lapidus is Greek, I believe, which may explain why he was bumped from the plain for the English pilot Seth Norris.
I have a more controversial theory about Ana Lucia and Jin. While it would appear that a Hispanic from LA and a Korean would have no genealogical ties to Great Britian, I noted that the back story of each made it clear that their fathers are unknown. I am not sure who Ana Lucia’s father will be, but I think Jin may be the son of Sam Austen. Sam Austen is Kate’s step-father and happened to be stationed in South Korea in the early 1970s with the Army. Combined with the fact that Jin’s mother was a Korean prostitute means only Maury Povich can rule him out as the daddy. Note that Austen is an English
surname.
Sun clearly has no Anglo blood. However, she should not have been on the plane. Her father setup Jin to be on the plane by sending him to deliver a watch to Sydney and one to LA, thus assuring that he would be on the plane. Sun was supposed to ditch Jin just before boarding the plane, but changed her mind at the last moment. Her father did not expect her to be on the plane.
Fittingly, Ben Linus has a name that I cannot pin down. Both his first and last name leave his ethnic origin ambiguous.
Last, even Hugo, who seems to be extremely Hispanic carries the nickname “Hurley” for some unexplained reason. Hurley is an English surname.
Note that Christian Sheppard married the “wrong woman” (Margo), but then found the right woman to bare his child in Claire Littleton’s mother. Note that Littleton is English and while Margo’s maiden name has not been revealed, the actress that plays Margo has a Scottish surname and has a fairly distinctive Scottish appearance.
If the Shephards are English, then Jack and Locke are on opposite sides of the family feud. It would also explain why Jack is not the important blood line for Christian. Jack is the Scottish/English bastard while Claire is pure English Aaron would be pure English assuming the father Thomas is English. Given that the Englishman hidmore has his painting it would not be a stretch to assume he is English.
There is a lot of food for thought here, I look forward to any commentary and additions that you can add
