I agree with Sandi about there being a lot of biblical parallels and want to take it a step further. The surname Shephard has links to the birth of Jesus. If you think about the carol "Whilst Shephards watched there flocks by night, all seated round the ground the angel of the lord came down and glory shone around"
If you apply the carol to Jack Shephard and the survivors of the crash, Jack becomes the "Shepard" watching his "flock" (the survivors of 815)until a major biblical event happens. Jack is the the natural leader of the "flock" of flight 815 and that is why he needs to return to the island. Jack has also performed "miracle" operations of the island as well.
You can take the analogy even further if you apply it to Christian who has also helped Claire and Jack both on and off the island. In the flashbacks we see that Christian had very strong ideas about how the young Jack should develop.
Jack is also going down the same addictive, self-destructive route as his father after leaving the island. I would suggest Christian was a resident on the island in the early years of his life. This would explain why he's appeared on the island after he's dead.
Locke isn't a natural leader for non-beleivers as we've seen in the series so far. He's an outcast and seems crazy. This is why he needs Jack because eventually Jack will realize the powers of the island and bring the community together.
BUT..the island seems to have two leaders as we've seen in Richard and Ben. We've seen Locke take Bens place with Richards help and this was to Bens disliking hence he shot Locke. But lets suppose Locke is now unhappy with Richard and he sees Jack as Richards replacement. That would cause trouble on the island because we saw people to doubt Ben ie Pickett. Perhaps this is when bad things happened. If we get Locke and Jack together we get the perfect balance between faith and science.
And finally..So why did Locke use a false name when he left the island? He used the name since he was paralyzed again after leaving the island and it was a way of arousing less attention.
